I feel the free market should policy this aspect of the free market in that if an entity "gouging" doesn't check themselves, when things return to more normal times, their reputation should suffer to prevent things like that in the future.
Sounds like the free market did police this. Amazon doesn't seem to believe that allowing this guy to operate on the platform is a net positive for their brand.

Does this actually happen though? I would be surprised if anybody except a couple of local people even remembered this guy in a year, and he's been nationally named and shamed. I don't think the public is all that conscientious about these things once the crisis is over

I guess I'm speaking more along the lines of establishments gouging and the government coming after them with price capping laws. I just don't think that's the role of the government in a free market economy. We're either gonna run it as a free market or not. The camel's nose in the tent is generally a bad thing. As far as individuals such as the OP highlighted, they can try to see a widget for what a widget brings. I don't think a company should discriminate based off an arbitrary deeming of what qualifies as a crisis and a corresponding higher pricing of a good. Either the widget sells for the seller's asking price or not. If someone is willing to pay the price...so be it.

Of course I don't care for folks taking advantage of others in this situation but I don't make the rules and a seller of a "hot commodity" shouldn't be punished for getting out ahead of things, stocking up, and making a profit.

Absolutely not. There's nothing wrong economically with what he did. If typure big on morals that's a separate issue.

If the stores would have increased prices appropriately people like him would not exist. His venture would have been made impossible.

Price gouging is not real. It’s a necessary component of capitalism so that all who need a product can have access to it.

Capitalism loses when people like this operate within the system. Capitalism works for people who choose to be moral with their free will.

From an emotional point of view, yes. Practically, no.

total BS, he can just put up a sign on the side of the road and sell out of that stuff in just a few hours as soon as word spreads

Not here. Not now.

People are seriously talking about physical violence and just taking his stuff.

He is scared. Now he is talking about donating it all. This backfired in the worst way for him.

I cannot believe he posed for photos. How stupid can you be? Did he think people were going to feel sorry for him?

Just create a new account and sell at a modest markup.

Amazon and PayPal have people who find stuff like that very quickly and block the new accounts.
