You're partially right, but in context of this story what you're saying doesn't make sense.
This guy specifically wasn't producing any additional hand sanitizer in the wake of a price incentive, he was creating scarcity in one place to profit off scarcity somewhere else.

This guy is an idiot. I guarantee I will be reading a story in the local media within a week. Either a property crime against his home or somebody slapping him upside the head in a public place.
Not sure what he thought he was going to accomplish by publicizing what he had done, but it was a bad, bad move. Terrible decision.

Basically, because price gouging isn't allowed, hoarding CAN take place.
That the hoarders end up price gouging is actually why price gouging on the front end SHOULD be allowed.

So I am a bit torn on this. People make smart, prescient acquisitions of goods all the time and if they made a good guess at supply and demand and were "first come , first served" so to say...that's good on them. That's how we are set up with capitalism. Where I am torn is on the ethical side of getting too greedy in time of disaster for example.
I guess where I come down on is that it is not the government's role to police this aspect of the free market. I feel the free market should policy this aspect of the free market in that if an entity "gouging" doesn't check themselves, when things return to more normal times, their reputation should suffer to prevent things like that in the future. I think that's the best solution when all is said and done.

Does this actually happen though? I would be surprised if anybody except a couple of local people even remembered this guy in a year, and he's been nationally named and shamed. I don't think the public is all that conscientious about these things once the crisis is over

He has pictures in an Air Force uniform and a lot of veterans are cursing and calling him a disgrace. I don't think I have ever seen vets go after another vet like they are him.
People are openly talking about whipping his arse and doing raiding parties on his home.
Apparently this went viral (no pun intended) and worldwide. This guy is getting hate from everywhere.
