On this day 75 years ago...the city of Tokyo was wiped off the map

On the evening of March 9-10, 1945, 279 B-29 Superfortress bombers took off from the island of Tinian en route for the capital city of Japan. The attack began at 12:08 AM local time as these 279 bombers dropped some 1,500 tons of explosives onto the city. The raid lasted for just under three hours. By the end of it, the roaring fires from 20,000 feet below caused heavy turbulence for the planes in the air. Crews were forced to don their oxygen masks due to the smell of burning flesh that was wafting up from thousands of feet below them.
Tokyo was turned into a literal Hell on earth. The fires were so intense that they would literally suck people into them. Charred bodies would be shrunken down to less than half their original size. When the bombings had ended and the people of Tokyo recovered from their daze and began taking account of the damage that had been done, they discovered more than 100,000 people in the city had been claimed by the bombs and fires. That's more than were killed in either Hiroshima or Nagasaki some five months later.

Yearly reminder to not frick with America when we are all united against a common enemy.

And they now bend the knee to Merica!

America went to the most extreme measures to end the war in the pacific.
We’re not really taught in school here what actually happened in the pacific or the reason behind it. In fact the entire pacific theatre is completely ignored other than a mention of the atomic bombs.
We tend to focus completely on Germany and ignore the entire other half of the war. I find that sad and it’s something I wish we could correct

It's beautiful how much they bounced back. Glad they are our allies and bend the knee to us now.

The scale of some of these bomber raids is hard for me to understand. 279 is realtively small when compared to some in Europe, but still crazy to think about. Imagine seeing 279 Cessnas flying overhead at once and thenk think what that must have looked like.

While I understand that it had to be done, killing thousands of civilians shouldn't be celebrated. It's a sobering reminder of the cost of war. RIP and thanks for posting.

They would have never quit if we didn't.
I assume you are aware of this.

That was America saying konichiwa.

Where does all of that debris go? They have to clean up the damage, but I’ve never thought about where they take it off to or what they do with it.

Why don't we tell them to go frick themselves. What would they do about it?

Did anyone else think that this was going to be a post about Godzilla?

And they still wouldn’t quit. Amazing.

You don't have to assume, you just have to read. It's literally the first words of my post.

I think everyone is aware, but it's still sad it had to be done. Hopefully we never see a conflict of that magnitude again. Never a good thing when innocent civilians have to die to prove a point.
