Honest response from a licensed mental health professional. I don’t expect the general public to fully understand mental illness and behavioral disorders. One of the biggest examples of this that I have seen throughout my career is the number of youth misdiagnosed as having an Attention Deficit Disorder. Individuals frequently call Donald Trump self-centered, or self focused. His situation is much more serious than that. He has a textbook Narcissistic Personality Disorder which clouds every decision he makes. Like Biden, he too is showing early signs of dementia. So, my preference would be a more cognitively stable person and certainly not someone with a diagnosable mental illness.

The issues you are talking about, such as self centeredness and narcissism are traits that many people have. Most people who have these traits fall short of having a full blown Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which is much more serious.

Go ahead and call me out for making a diagnosis on someone I have never interviewed. I understand that. The issue for me is this. If any POTUS was standing at a microphone manifesting clear auditory hallucinations, persecutory delusions and “word salad” it wouldn’t take a face to face interview to determine if that person was psychotic. Trumps Narcissistic Personality Disorder is just as clear and can’t be ignored. Videos of his tweets and videos of his speeches will be used in Maladaptive Behavior courses in Psychology for decades to come.

Again, I wouldn’t want any Democrat, Republican or Independent to serve in the White House with any toxic Personality Disorder, any active psychotic disorder or any untreated active Bi-polar Disorder or Major Depression. I say that even though I’m an advocate for the mentally ill.
