So, kinda polling the whole crowd here and not trying to start an "apple fanboi" vs "google fanboi" fight. However, in terms of smart devices and data. Who does everyone "trust" more?

I'm starting to feel uncomfortable with using: Google, gmail, google photos, google home, nest thermostat and nest cams (ironically owning iphones and apple tvs).

Can one really trust Apple over Google or vice versa?

Anything connected to the internet you can't trust.

Goodbye.

Sure. But in terms of privacy, Google claims they don't "sell" your data but just provide it to "some" 3rd parties. Apple is kinda mum on this type stuff.

I guess, in short, do folks trust 1 over the other?

I think Apple respects privacy more, but it doesn't really matter because 3rd parties are going to exploit the frick out of what they can collect on either platform.

I don't think trust is even applicable in this context. Logically, you have to know that Google is in the advertising business and they for instance target customers by imposing tracking cookies through their Chrome browser. So if you want more privacy aka don't want tracking cookies, then don't using Google Chrome. I'm currently using the latest version of Microsoft Edge which is based on the Chrome engine but does not install tracking cookies. I know this because I use virus protection software that removes the tracking cookies every time I have used Chrome yet does not find tracking cookies when I use Edge.

I don't use Apple products but based on my experience with Google, I would definitely think that Apple is less likely to violate personal privacy compared to Google which seems to be in the business of harvesting and using personal information for profit.

This is important.

One other thing that is important is we aren't as unique as we like to think we are. Even if you live completely off grid, your family and friends don't and they talk about you behind your back (you're in their contacts, photos they post, etc.). You may not have facebook but maybe you have LinkedIn for work, and you probably use a product that loves selling you out, credit cards.

There is enough information out there about you to know that even though you don't talk to any voice assistants, you have a 90% similarity score with some guy who blabs to Alexa, Siri and Google all day. So the ads They throw at him will probably work on you.

Don't kid yourselves. The single most valuable commodity on this planet is our information. Apple, Facebook, eBay, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, every last one of them all hoard it, use it, sell it, etc, to maximize profit.

Do you REALLY care?

For instance, people freaked out about being targeted by ads of things they searched or were connected to via other various factors.

I'd much rather see shite I'd be more likely to be interested in than a random ad.

As long as neither is releasing truly sensitive data (i.e. personal messages, finances, photos, etc.) I could not care less.

Anything they "sell" is likely public knowledge anyway.

neither are trustworthy. But with one you have the option to remove everything used to track/monitor you.

Yes and no.
Not so much about me but now that I have kids, especially girls, it creeps me out, a bit. They only stay young for so long so I'd prefer to keep them as innocent as possible for as long as possible.

I've noticed their consumption of YouTube Kids now has them watching "Masha and Bear" stuff, based on what they clicked but after about 5 videos of cartoon type stuff I then see them watching grown arse adults running around in Masha and Bear costumes in Chechnya or Russia or some shite.

Actually what REALLY got me thinking about this is my wife and I have been using Google Photos for about 1-2 years now. I recently noticed we have about 20k photos in there and over 3/4ths are just of my kids and/or my wife and I. I started feeling creeped out by that lately cause I dunno why Google is giving me a free storage service for nearly 20k photos/videos.

Makes me start wondering if I'm the product at that point. Again, don't care about me, I can easily be found in today's age but my girls... that's creepy.

Does one trust google photos vs. apple photos?

I don't knwo the answer, but a few weeks after I switched to an Android phone 5 or so years ago my identity and credit card info for one of my cards were stolen. Perhaps coincidental, but I've always been suspicious. But I did do some search one time and my info was hacked on some app on the Android phone. Forget which app. I have my credit locked down, but I still get letters from credit card companies 3 or 4 times a year saying they need more info for an open application. I call them and they say the application couldn't be processed because of the freeze on my credit, so at least that works.
