Just finished watching Once upon a time in Hollywood and I just don't get it

Sure there was good acting but what the hell was the point of this movie?
I am usually a big fan of Tarantino movies because, even though some of them are all over the place, they all tie together at the end and make for an awesome ending.
I was just guessing at what I had watched when the credits hit at the end of this one.
Maybe I missed the plot line somewhere. If anyone can clue me in I would appreciate it.
TIA

What's the point of any movie? They're stories. Also, you done fricked up by not seeing it in the theatre.

It’s a great movie. That’s the point of it

I'm not going to argue about it being a well put together film with great acting and a stellar cast.
I just don't understand the story Tarantino was trying to tell, that's all.

Do you know the real story of Sharon Tate?

It's just a "what if this happened" instead of what really happened. I loved it personally

No, but I would appreciate some education if it will tie up loose ends on this movie.

It was part of the Manson murders in real life, this just tells an alternate ending to that

Obviously you know nothing about the Manson family & the murder of Sharon Tate. Read "Helter Skelter" by Vincent Bugliosi. He is the guy who prosecuted the Manson Family & wrote the definitive book about it. The movie was about life in L.A. revolving around this story & he changed things around similar to what he did in Inglorious Basterds.

It’s an period piece. The city was the movies main character.

Exactly. It was a very famous murder that would be interesting to look up in its own right. Well this movie offers a revised ending which no one saw coming.
Everyone, or at least I, expected to it to end as it did in real life. It was a huge curveball.

Maybe I missed something but did they kill off Charlie Manson in the movie?
I don't remember that part if they did. It seems like if this were an alternate ending style movie, this would be the "money shot".

I think he was interested in showing the end of an era along with his retconning of the lord of innocence that spurred that end.

It was a fairy tale showing the start and end of ones career in Hollywood.

In real life some Manson followers go and kill the neighbors of Leo’s character. One of them being Sharon Tate (Margo Robbie).
That’s what they were about to do when they were outside Leo’s house in the street in the movie. Then he yelled at them, they left, and they decided to go to the house next door instead with the actor that was an a-hole to them.
This movie was just a quirky alternative to real life with QTs typical spin set in the backdrop of someone’s acting career
A number of parts were entertaining but I didn’t like it nearly as much as most of his other stuff

look, people will tell you youre just a dumb dumb, but i felt this movie was a miss too.
the manson stuff was just so in the background and disjointed from the rest of the movie that it never really connected for me either.
i enjoyed good chunks of it, but its def pretty low on my tarantino tier list.

Movie was a B-. It was a 2 and half hour movie with 3 or 4 great scenes
Posted on 2/10/20 at 10:01 pm to nateslu1
Tarantino wanted you to watch one scene so he made you sit through 2.5 hours of fluff.

It may be the worst QT movie I’ve ever seen. And that’s not a bad thing really. A bad QT movie is still a solid movie. It just missed with me, almost completely. It was, for lack of a better word, boring. And the end didn’t make up for the rest of the movie for me. I hated the whole “fairy tale/alternate ending” angle for the Tate musters.
The most interesting part for me was when Pitt went to the old movie ranch. And that was painfully slow. Normally QT builds tension in a great way and his dialogue is awesome. Neither were true for this one.
Huge miss.

It's clearly the desirable alternate ending to the Manson murders - that unfortunately never happened
