Per 247Sports, 19-of-30 five-star prospects in the 2020 class signed with one of Georgia, Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State or LSU.
This stat is remarkable, if not necessarily surprising. Perhaps an even more eye-opening number, nearly half of the top 100 prospects on 247Sports -- 47 of 'em -- ended up with one of the five above programs. As four-star QB Carson Beck (who signed with Georgia) put it, we're dealing with an "arms race" at the top. The unfortunate offshoot of this is that the ultimate Playoff field each fall is limited to just a handful of potential combatants. The talent gap just continues to widen.

Looks like the status quo at the top is not changing anytime soon .

It has always been this way they just didn’t have the metrics to show for it.

Tennessee went down Georgia went up
LSU went up when UA was down and we have been able to get back up. Put AU and LSU against BAMA and you have the see saw of the west.
If TAM goes up it means that OU and UT will go down. There is only room for 5-6 elite teams and 10 near elite teams.

Yet the superbowl had 18 starters who were 2 star or unranked players coming out of HS.

UGA has to be the most underachieving program in the history of CFB

The funny thing is the 2017 class that finished 7th many would have whinged about, but that is the most impactful class I’ve seen. (The same year the HC was fired).
Delpit, Stevens, chaisson, Deculus, Shevlin, Phillips, Vincent, Ingram, Charles, CEH, Queen, Jefferson and more.
We all thought losing Akers, Marvin Wilson, Moses was the end of the world. But Coach O built arguably the best team ever from that recruiting class. One recruit isn’t going to change the world, coach O knows what his doing.

It'd be awesome if Ohio State, Clemson, and Oklahoma had to battle conference foes who were also talented.

You know, since LSU is one of the beneficiaries I have zero issues with this.

ETA: I do remember hearing such sentiments sprinkled throughout my life. Once upon a time they said such things referring to a list that included Texas and USCw. Before that, the list included Notre Dame and Michigan.

This is not new, but it isn't forever either.

Some it is due to the rating services giving kids bumps when they commit to the elite programs.

I think everyone is forgetting about the wildcard and that’s the transfer portal. These teams can keep signing all these players but due to depth and ego, these kids will eventually start transferring. I think the QB position was the first impactful place we’ve seen this with LSU benefiting the most but look at Ohio St, Oklahoma and etc. eventually you’ll start seeing other positions, filling in strategic gaps for other teams. The transfer portal will eventually help offset this.

Wait until we can start officially paying players. These smaller schools wont be able to keep up. Not many teams can match the budgets these top programs have.

I mentioned this a month ago when one of the main top scout guys at 247 had his own personal rating and the top 8 all were committed to Bama, Clemson, and Ohio St.

It's always been an arms race, but Clemson did build their program on top 12-15 ranked talent, not top 10. Of course though, during that span, VT and FSU were the only real competition in the league worth anything. It could happen with Oregon and USC in the Pac. USC needs the right coach and Oregon needs a good OC.

ETA on my arms race comment. When I say ALWAYS, I mean it. If decades back there were never more than 6-8 teams who were truly battling for the top of CFB in any decade.

Wow, amazing stat and how a team finishes yearly in the rankings does matter, hard to argue.
