On longer trips i really start to feel lonely toward the end. I like the solitude for the first day or two but it starts to wear on you after a while.

I end up just drinking by myself at a bar until I’m ready to hit the sack.

My wife had to travel some 20 years ago and her companies would put them up at a Hilton or better. Sometimes I would piggyback on her convention and just enjoy it.

I usually stayed in Hampton Inn. Not particularly nice but almost never a total dump. If they had a decent priced Embassy Suites sometimes I'd stay there.

Crowne Plaza properties tend to be outdated and raggedy in my opinion.

I’ve seen some Embassy Suites that are also long in the tooth.

As of last year the courtyard marriotts served alcohol all day, not just a "cocktail hour". Maybe it's different in Utah. But it does suck they all close at 10.

The one I still use because it's the only decent option in town serves alcohol all day. I was talking more about having a designated bar. Half the time it's the front desk clerk coming over to take your drink order. And like you said they close at 10, though I've gotten them to sell me a beer or two to take to the room after 10.

20 year traveler
I've been doing this since 1995. People ask what I'm going to do when I retire. My wife and I have a routine: I laugh and say, "Stay home", volunteer for things I don't have time for now, play golf twice a week, do honey-do's I never have time for. I certainly don't want to travel."

"The wife chimes in,"I'll miss you. I'm going to (fill-in-the-blank) "

I chime back, "I'll be here when you get back!"

She'll reply, "Just my luck."

Then we just laugh. Keeps people guessing.

I used to drink a lot back then. The happy hour was a selling point

Loved it when I was single and traveling all over the country on the companies dime - there were very few drawbacks then.

Once I got married and had a kid, then it started to suck, especially the two-week international pulls. I don’t mind the airport experience - I get there with enough time and wait in the lounge...and it’s the best place to hammer out emails or work on spreadsheets, as I don’t have people coming in my office every ten minutes.

The worst part is being away from family and feeling like you’re missing out on stuff. So, if you can do it while you’re young and single, then beat the breaks off of it and ride that train as long as you can.

I don't do it anymore but I traveled for about a decade 20'ish weeks per year.

Living out of a suitcase kind of sucks after a while. Spending tons of time in airports, eating out every meal, missing things at home. I quit when my daughter was 2 or 3.

On the plus side, I got to see much of North America on someone else's dime and you tend to save a lot of money traveling because you aren't spending much of your own. My wife came to a few cool places with me too and we were only out her ticket, food and maybe an extra night or two of the hotel.

I completely identify with your post fallguy.....only I did it until my sons were 7 and 9 years old. Glad those days are over.

They've gotten a little pricy. I had to go to our Atlanta store for a few days in Jan and a Hampton on the NE side of ATL was 177 a night.

I usually chose my hotel based on proximity to bars and restaurants. I'd rather drive an extra 15 minutes to the office but have things to do in the evenings.

I have a job now where I stay 30-40 minutes away from the job site just so I have dining/bar options in the evening. There's a Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express in the town where the job is, but absolutely no decent dining options.

This 100%. I try to at least find a property that has a restaurant or bar in the hotel or at least sells beer or wine at the snack bar.

It's tough with young kids. You miss so much. Luckily, I was able to transfer to a different department in the same company that reduced my travel to 3-4 weeks per year.

I don't work there anymore and think I've traveled 2-3 weeks in the past 8 years for work.

I always ask older business owners/customers. "Why are you here every time I come by? Your son/manager have a handle on the business." Their reply and my retort is always the same.
Them: I would get bored really fast. You will too when you retire.
Me: I've been working since I was 14. I am doing 4 things in retirement. Golf, fish, frick and drink. I don't think I will ever get bored with those things. 5 more years and I will find out.

There are different kinds of travel. One is to fly somewhere and stay for 1 or 2 months. The other was flying out every week. The first type was much better, especially if it was in a good location with a good team.

The second kind was the pits. Flight delays on Friday meant you got home late. Then you’d try to leave early enough on Sunday to get to your destination at a decent hour but that rarely worked because of delays. The regular flyers would run in packs through Atlanta airport to make connections.

Neither one would be conducive to folks with a family.

Unplanned, last minute trips were always a bummer, especially if arriving late in the evening.
