Is Sean Payton a HOF coach?

We know Drew is a shoe in but what about Sean? A super bowl win and 3 NFC champ game appearances. If not, what does he have to do to get there?

No. They are extremely selective when enlisting coaches into the HOF. Look how long it took Jimmy Johnson to get there, and he has quite a few more rings than Payton.
I'd love to see Payton in, but the voting history stands against it.

Absolutely, just based on his offenses.

It's 2 to 1. You may be thinking of the one Switzer won after he took over after Jones fired Jimmy.
If SP were to retire now, I don't think he gets in bc the voters will look at the bounty BS as a huge negative. If he continues for another 7-8 years, he should be over 200 wins (8-10 wins per year) which puts him around the top 10. That will get him in, but they will make him wait bc of the bounty BS

Unless he retires young he will be in the HOF
He already has a better winning percentage and the same amount of Super Bowl wins as Bill Cowher. He will probably catch him in wins in 2 seasons.

No. Bountygate and grudges from the Goodell contingent will permanently keep Payton out. Unless he stays around a very VERY long time and becomes an absurdly all-time winning percentage coach.
(Before you downvote me, I'm not saying that I THINK he shouldn't be in because of Bountygate - just that we've all seen how the antangonism between Payton and the NFL, has worked out over the years. Needless to say, they don't get along.)
Cowher and Jimmy Johnson are not really valid comparisons asHOF coaches. They both got in for their TV work. One from each network, the same day, inducted live on TV on their shows. Don't kid yourself that it was based on their coaching records alone. This was a bone to the networks.

Good point. I was
Still doesn't change my point in that the Hall voters are particularly stingy when it comes to coaches. I think they will put just about any player in nowadays, but coaches seem to get forgotten. I'm not saying it is right; it's just how it is

He definitely needs to outlast Goodell and Goodell's people before he can make it to the HoF

I love Payton and glad he is the Saint's coach. He is not a HOF coach he only has 1 Superbowl win and appearance. If that all it takes the HOF will be watered down soon. If he wins 1 more maybe and if he won 2 for sure.
If Andy Reid wins sunday he might get the nod.

If Don Coryell is in the HOF, Payton absolutely belongs.
Posted on 1/31/20 at 4:21 pm to whichyalnoaboutseven
he should, but they wont, they will use bounty gate as an excuse not to put him in
maybe 10-15 years down the line when the saints hate from the league office is gone they might allow it

He's not in the HOF. But if essentially inventing the vertical passing game in the NFL means anything, he probably should be. I mean, his teams were merely 'good' and his playoff record is abysmal but Bill fricking Cowher? That just doesn't compute IMO.

Why would Reid automatically get the nod and not SP? They would have the same SB wins. Reid just has 70 more wins over 9 more years

Jimmy only coached in the NFL for 9 years and a couple of those were a major struggle.
Sean already has 51 more career wins and his win % is almost 10% higher. Plus another decade as an assistant coach.
By the time it’s all said and done he’s absolutely a lock.

Payton is 13 years in, all with the same team, and is still only 56. Not many can boast the same resume to start a career.
His candidacy will more than likely hinge on how far he wants to take his career

I would say yes. They let Cowher in and most are in agreement that Andy Reid will get in. If those guys are HOFs then what's the argument against Sean?
Goodell doesn't get to decide who's in the HOF so Bounty Gate or whatever grudge he has with Payton doesn't mean anything.

He will be after we win the SB next year w/. Hill running the offense.

True but when those Cowboy teams started to roll, they were something else. And winning 2 SB's in consecutive years is pretty rare. And, the Cowboys have been dog shite without Johnson so clearly he was doing something that Jones has been able to recreate.

If Tony Dungy is then Payton is. That said, Dungy shouldn't have been elected.

Reid's beloved by the media and Sean isn't.
