Wait. I don’t understand. If you are unemployed and on welfare, do you get a tax refund? Honest question and, please for the sake of my sanity and blood pressure, I hope the answer is no.

I’ve made a point of this for years. We need to stop referring to it as a tax “refund.” The people who go all out and buy dumb shite at tax season are very more than likely getting back MORE of a “refund” than they paid in each year.

Many get loans against this manna from heaven prior to the receipt of actual money from the government. These aren’t cases where someone paid in 3500 and got back 3500 (although those can happen). Which would be a “refund.” These are cases where someone paid in a nominal amount, or zero, and gets thousands “back” from the government.

So yeah. That’s my yearly rant that we shouldn’t call them “refunds” for everyone. More like free money for claiming all the kids in the neighborhood.

It is not a refund. It is the government paying you back on your interest free loan to it.

Robbery season is almost over. It’s literally like a water faucet turning off once the tax returns start coming back.

Enjoy it until May boys.

If you're unemployed and on welfare, I'm not familiar with any tax credits that are refundable without earned income, but I could be wrong.

It's a refund of their own money for most folks on this board.

The past pride is talking about, and the part I can't wrap my head around, is the folks who think owe/refund is all that matters. It's the same people who are worried about your monthly car note instead of the actual purchase price. The amount of clients I have that think the tax cuts were shitty for them is incredible. They're mad they can't itemize anymore or they didn't get a refund like usual, yet they paid less in total taxes nonetheless.

That's literally what a refund is. A pay back of their own money.

I didn't argue anything period and certainly none of this.

I'm just saying using the term refund is factually correct by the definition of the word.
