This is up there, right? Earnhardt was huge at the time. Roberto Clemente. Who else?

Jose Fernandez was one of the top young pitchers in the MLB

People say Thurman Munson was huge.

I think people cooled on Fernandez once the shitty circumstances came to light

Well, if you’re counting retired people, you’d have to mention Vince Lombardi and Mickey Mantle.
Another one would be Knute Rockne (plane crash in Kansas).

Closer they were to their prime, the bigger it is as to that person. While playing is much bigger than after retired, but people in GOAT conversations who aren’t super old have to beat all.

Yeah that is prob third biggest I can think of.

Payne Stewart maybe?
Payne Stewart’s tragic death was pretty bizarre. Jet loses pressurization, the pilots and passengers lose consciousness and the jet flies until it runs out of fuel.

John Lennon
He didn't play sports but I was watching Monday Night Football when Howard Cosell broke the news of his shooting and death.

Yes he was coked out of his mind, but he was still really young and it was sad to see him go in the prime of his life. People make mistakes
