That’s why this is a big deal. He was a global icon. And while you may not have liked him or don’t understand why we place athletes on pedestals we do. What stood out about Kobe was his Mamba Mentality. The placing his craft above everything else. You could apply that to anything from being the most dedicated baker to a top notch surgeon.

It’s a good thing for a culture to memorialize our most talented people. It brings us together and it makes us reflect on our common mortality.
That said, it’s better to be stoic and respectful rather than the Grief Junkie stuff you see on social media. That cheapens the moment.

He was one of the world’s most popular athletes. Perhaps only Jordan, LeBron and a handful of soccer players were more well known. Obviously, in part, because it was unique, but he was in the rare are of being simply a “one name” athlete.
