What am I reading? Why would they be involved? Link to story

You want to put exactly what the emails are allegedly about in the OP?
You know, the Saints helping with PR damage control for the Archdiocese of New Orleans because of the sexual abuse of minors.

Hmm, which person involved with the Saints organization would have the power and be stupid enough to involve the Saints in this mess?
Perhaps a former secretary and interior decorator who has been married three times and finagled billions out of the third marriage? A person who started the relationship that resulted in that 3rd marriage at the funeral of her future husband's wife? A person who has been the subject of 20 civil lawsuits over a 13 year period, beginning in 1987, for multiple reasons. A person once arrested and charged with theft of furniture from a client? A person who had a history of federal and state tax liens?
I would note that I am no fan of the family she fought against to maintain control of the Saints but I also believe there were no good guys in that mess.

This article is confusing as hell.

So the Saints PR department advised the Dioceses PR department

It really is.
It's hard to tell if the Saints basically gave PR advice on how to lessen the blow (no pun intended), or if they actually aided in something illegal or immoral.
Either way, it's certainly not a good look. And if the NFL can punish the Saints for something, I have a feeling they will try as best as they can to do so.

I don’t necessarily have an issue with this

If this is the case, I don’t have the words to say. If Gayle was involved than there needs to be new ownership and every person held accountable whether it’s being fired, or arrested, depending on the outcome of an investigation.
ETA: Or this could be all about nothing, we will see. I’d personally like to see the outcome of the investigation

My guess:
Gayle Benson pledging contributions to the Archdiocese of New Orleans to cover operational cost and of the list of expenses were defense attorney fees. And in the emails Gayle probably got a little too friendly with one of her friends at the Archdiocese. Something to the affect of how much of a bitch Rita LeBlanc is.

One could argue that offering PR advice to mitigate immoral actions is immoral in itself.
The problem the Catholic Church has always had in this matter is the failure to have a true 'mea maxima culpa'. They always seem to want to add a qualifier or tell less than the whole truth. Even with the lists of accused personnel released there were names and incidents left off. They are not Coca Cola so this should NEVER involve PR if they truly want to get past this.

The Bensons are yuge catlicks

Attorneys for the men suing the church say “multiple” Saints personnel, including Senior Vice President of Communications Greg Bensel, used their team email to advise church officials on “messaging” and how to soften the impact of the archdiocese’s release of a list of clergy members “credibly accused” of sexual abuse.
If this is all it is, it sounds like a big nothing.
Hard to tell from the article if there’s more to it or not though.

Yah I feel like this is something that will result in a small fine and a slap on the wrist

Defense attorney fees or the settlements themselves. There is a lawsuit over the sourcing of the settlement monies and Gayle's recent $5 milliion gift may end up dragging the Saints into that suit.
As to Rita, I am no fan of Gayle but I still believe that Rita was the source of initial information to the NFL on Bountygate. I think she felt disresepcted by Loomis and Payton and that was her idea to get them out. I think Tom Benson accepted the deal because he figured that out. I think the speaker thing with Loomis was a setup to find out who leaked Bountygate to the NFL.

hasn't she always been pretty in tangled with the diocese over there? I thought I recall even reading when she took over they'd have a seat at the table

She and the Archbishop are regular companions. I do not mean that in a bad way. He is at a lot of Pelicans and Saints games as well as social events with Mrs. Benson.

Exactly. The Church wants to discipline its own even if the behavior is criminal. They don't want to call the cops because they are concerned about the PR damage. Plus there is probably conflict of interest due to the fact that many of the people that implement discipline within the Church are diddlers too.
The Church should have set up an independent special council where all these accusations could be filtered.
Crimes could be referred to secular authorities and non-crimes could be sent to Church disciplinarians.

So creepy it's like when Carmela and Ro kept having that weird priest over at their houses and theyd constantly be making zitis for him.
Church is for Sundays, weddings, and funerals!
