First time hearing him call football.
Sounds like Chris Blair is calling a peewee game.
Robotic. No emotion. Boring.
Hawthorne may not have been polished, but that cat was LSU 100% Homer excitement.

Hawthorne was miserable to listen to.

Everyone complained about Hawthorne. Can’t make everyone happy.

100% homer? Only when he saw LSU dominating.
He was a miserable rantard any time the opponent was making a positive play.

I go back as far as John Ferguson who broke me up. I think a math teacher must have gotten to him since almost on every play, it was like "and he makes it down to the 30 yard line plus 3". Hey, he was the "flashcards" of college football.

Blair is very good professionally, but he doesn’t fit here.

I like CB, but I don’t like listening to his call. IMO, he tries to give to many ancillary details before saying what actually happened. For example, listening to him call the basketball game the other night we shot the ball, and it was literally a minute before he said whether the shot went in or not. And it’s constant. My son and I listened while on the way home for about 30 mins. Extremely hard to follow what actually is going on.. Just call the game and after let the details come out in between.

I like Blair, but I did not like that he changed his touchdown call from “Touchdown Tigers” to “Touchdown LSU” just because we were playing the Clemson fake tigers. Say touchdown Clemson if you want, but when calling touchdowns for the home team, use your normal call. I promise we wouldn’t have been confused. It killed the excitement of his calls because “touchdown LSU” just doesn’t roll of the tongue as well.

Then don’t listen to it?

Blair is better at calling baseball than football. Baseball fits his calling more.

I have no issues with Blair
I enjoy his baseball call
Sitting outside with a beer fixing to grill burgers listening to it

Blair was hoarse on Monday.
Go back and listen to him call the Florida or Bama game. He gets plenty excited. Or even check out the video of him in the press box in the dome. Pumping his fists, raising his hands—the guy’s all in.

Yep. Have to agree. Something is missing.

The common critique on Blair is that he is technically sound but lacks emotional resonance. The critique on Hawthorne was kind of the opposite. I enjoy them both.

Hawthorne messed up every big call of his career.
Hawthorne was absolutely miserable to listen to when the Tigers weren't playing well.
Hawthorne let Doug Moreau talk waaaaay too much.
I loved Hawthorne, because that's who I grew up with.
That said :
Blair gets his biggest calls right.
Blair keeps an even keel when things aren't going the Tigers' way.
Blair keeps Moreau's moronic droning to a minimum.

Totally agree about Blair. Very disappointed in his calls during this amazing run. The regular tv broadcast was always more exciting. When CBS would replay the play of the game first as broadcast and then as Blair called it, the tv broadcast was always way more exciting. I started out watching the ESPN Hometown broadcas during the National championship game and it nearly put me to sleep. Chris Fowler was WAY more exciting to listen to. I miss Hawthorne- he seemed to care. I know I’ve seen videos of Blair doing play by play and he looked excited but sure didn’t sound like it in his voice.

Peach Bowl was first time I heard Chris also. Like everyone said very professional but not “true” homer excitement. Makes you appreciate just how good Jim Henderson with the Saints on WWL truly was in pulling off this balancing act!!!

I miss Hawthorne. To me he was synonymous with LSU. He knew how to call a game with the right emotion because he was a fan of the university. He made mistakes, but to me that was part of his charm.
