case and point. USWF took in 3 limits of ducks for survey during split in Hackberry. Guess what they were loaded with? Small snails, leaches, shrimp, clam, grubs, multiple crustaceans, you name it. Guess what else. a few of the ducks had gorged on small apple snails!!! So tell me how great it would be for ducks to help with that invasive snail population.

What makes you say that, the point system? Because from 92-99 we beat the absolute brakes off the ducks.
I think the overall trend in the SE is certainly down. But I don’t think it’s a bad as some are making it out to be. There still birds in the lower MS flyway. This year has been better than last year. We’re ~250 birds better with a week + to go.

quote:let's see in 1983 I had at least 5 hunts with 10 widgeon or 10 pintails.... I have had maybe 5 hunts since late 80s where I could have replicated that since. and I'm basing that off the number of ducks you saw riding around on rural highways then or on your way back from hunting marsh or out fishing. if you are 250 better than last year and you are in LA - you are in the extreme minority.

areas in SE and south central la that have been hammered by both - are largely devoid of ducks.

Saw a pile of shells last week on the bank.
Looks like the coons have learned how to eat them.

Yes there are spots in Louisiana where numbers are still holding no one is arguing that. We are talking about the big picture not just "your blind". That seems to be the first thing weak minded folks want to defend. Numbers are up because "we" killed more. Not how it works. Your success if negated by 12 others that saw a decline or no change from last three years doesn't mean numbers are up are we are in a better spot. Last season was arguably one of the worst ever. My two spots were great we had increases at both..... didn't see me coming here and bragging. I seen the bigger picture. While my spots flourished everyone around me declined and every guide we seen and spoke with struggled. This year same two spots haven't seen anything close to 1- 2 man limit on a hunt.

Plenty salvania in the marshes north of ellender bridge, none west of joes cove and south into oyster lake. I do see it in the Sabine ditches off 27 at times. It’s thick in GC along with non native aquatic grasses. Bell city drain ditch was impassable a couple years ago due to salvania.

what i have seen for past 15 plus is ducks coming down with fronts - then vanishing.....

I am good friends with owners of 2 of the best rice farms in Jeff Davis Parish. I hunted with them for 30 years. One is 3 miles north of Welsh and the other is 1 mile north of Roanoke. Even during the 3/30 years we slayed the ducks and geese. Not anymore. As more and more acreage converts to crawfish, the water is too deep for dabblers. And the salvania and snail combo is killing the marsh. This is the first year since I was 10 that I dont make trip to a duck blind.

And tough as nails to hunt. You gotta be dedicated to run to the pipeline canal and then pile in a pirogue and push pole in about half a mile to set up. Most are at the gate for 4am to start too.

quote:I'm still tough... just not as motivated as I once was... I will say this.. I have had to work significantly harder for ducks this year... and in many cases it meant LOOOONG walks or paddles in - rather that boat, truck or atv so that we could end up in the middle of ducks at sunrise and many people my age that i wanted to bring were like ... OH FACK Thatn.. noticed at several spots - walk in ducks stay, ride atv or truck close to blind - they evacuate....

we lost our lease in tensas but got a portion back - but it's covered in salvinia this year i have not made a trip there - only ring necks and even they were sparse
we are likely ditching our st landry spot and tensas.. just not worth it... will spend my time and effort elsewhere - those dry fields can spoil you.
