It's that time for her. Been going back and fore with this. I don't have any papers on her, but could get them. She is a outstanding bird dog. Loves to hunt no matter if it's raining or not.

There would be no way I could keep a pup off her, but know a few people that would love one.

What would you do?

A old picture of her

if the dog has clear health clearances and is a field performer.... I would vote against fixing.... talking with someone now that has a young boykin that SHOULD be fixed (due to some health traits it's tested for- NO pup not out of one of my litters).... the best of the breed should breed fish...... my male ain't too far away....

I agree on a good field dog papers or not. Both mom and pop were cleared and both are hunting stock.

Oh, she is about 15" at the shoulders and weight is around 30 lbs. Very healthy that gets to run a lot.

IMO, spay/neuter is a catch all for people who don’t take care of their animals. Many Vets parrot this because it has been drilled into them while in school. Responsible owners shouldn’t be as concerned but that’s only my opinion.
Beautiful dog by the way.

Man I want a Boykin so bad but the price tag here in the Carolinas is too much for me.

Being the owner of a male dog, that wasn't registered (but could have been), we had ours fixed. In my minds, it's a much different for boy dogs vs girl dogs. When adolescent male dogs are in their prime they, and their hormones, are a handful to deal with. Everything from making everything under the sun, to humping anything that moves, wanting to wander (and mild aggressiveness (which our dog never showed)) all figured into our decision to have our boy fixed (FWIW, there are times where we regret the decision). Additionally, from a genetic point of view, he would have been difficult to breed in this area because many of the dogs out here are related to each other.

Females are alot easier to deal with and don't have many problems of the males. If she's not showing problems, then I think I'd go with most of the group think here and keep her intact for at least a little while longer.

Edit: Here's our boy...

Completely agree, there was a great article that came out the other day about the damaging effects spaying/neutering can have to a dog that’s too young. LINK

Also was interesting to see them mention other forms of sterilization (such as a vasectomy) that could and should be an option without castration if the owner if adamant about going down that path.

Sold an extremely well bred trained bitch to a guy and first trip to vet they start the spay sermon. He calls me and I told him to change vets ASAP. Find a combo large breed/pet vet, they understand performance animals and deal with Normal people not city idiots.
Those dogs look like they can read your mind with their eyes.

I’ve got a male in my avatar that isn’t fixed. ~43#

We’ve thought about getting him fixed recently. I haven’t really tried to connect with female Boykin owners and my breeder won’t connect me with his network unless I pass a bunch of hunt tests. Which I’ve elected not to pursue.

Is testicular cancer something I should be worried about?

Didn’t realize this was OtB now?

How big a concern is testicular cancer in uncut mar dogs?

She is to young. Going on 9 months. If I would breed her, it would be another year. We are going to have her fixed Friday. The more the wife bitched about having to deal with a dog in heat, I gave up. I don't have a kennel outside to keep her from other dogs hitting her. My male dog is fixed, but neighbors dogs are not.
