How does it lessen the chances? Be specific and use facts, please.

So now being an anti-vaxer has been defined all the way down to not getting the flu shot?

That makes between 2/3 and 1/2 of America anti-vaxxers depending on the year.

Calling someone anti-vaccine because they don’t agree with the huge leap of not getting the flu shot causing someone to go blind is stupid.

kids get fever induced seizures. anything over 102 is really dangerous

To be fair....lower grade fevers can cause seizures in children as well.

And the length of the seizure is the concern. Kid has a quick seizure lasting a few seconds....not as concerning as a child having a seizure lasting minutes.

I would guess the blindness is attributed to her having severe febrile seizures?

I don’t necessarily consider all those that refuse the flu shot anti vaxx. And I realize the flu shot isn’t perfect by any means. But even 30% protection is better than NO protection and it’s been shown that if you get the flu shot and still get the flu....you will experience a much milder version than someone that caught the same strain of flu as you but didn’t get a flu shot. If the child in the article had gotten the flu shot...they still may have gotten the flu...but very possible they would not have suffered blindness.

So yeah....just get the flu shot. Especially if you are around young kids, the elderly, and those immunocompromised. And make sure all your children 6 months old and older get it every year.

Since when is blindness a symptom or result of the flu?

That’s not what he’s trying to say. If you’d read the article you would see that the flu shot prevents blindness.

The disappearance of the sane middle ground on this topic is alarming.

Yes I will vaccinate my kids against mumps, whooping cough, etc.

No I will not accept your foul, hastily-developed annual anti-flu concoction.

Hastily developed?

You might want to educate yourself on the influenza viruses and how rapidly they change.

It is why they have to develop a new vaccine every year. So every year they have to start vaccine development. The vaccine can not protect against every strain out there so CDC and other health organizations help determine which strains to protect against for the upcoming season.

The U.S. typically has a similar flu season as Australia, so CDC can look at Australia’s flu season to give an idea of how our flu season will be.

Did she ever drink water?

All people that have become blind have consumed water.

Don't drink water.

You do realize getting a flu shot does not guarantee that you will not get the flu?

You won’t get flu caused by the strains that are included in the vaccine. There are many strains of influenza circulating at all times and you can pick one up if you’re unlucky. Even then, though, your symptoms will be decreased if you’ve had a flu shot; and the more often you get a flu vaccine, the more resistance you’ll have against all strains.

I'm 43 years old. I've had the flu once. I've never had a flu shot.
