My 11 year old got the shot this year and still caught the flu. I didn’t get the flu shot and didn’t catch it even while being exposed to it taking care of the little one. I just didn’t feel like making time to go to the doctor’s office and kept forgetting when I pass a Walgreens that a lot of their stores give the shots

Im actually surprised it took this long for someone to point it out.
I dont get the flu shot. I have this notion that if I get sick (which is literally once a year) its an antibody/antigen I didn't have but now do. So if I collect enough of them, im essentially just as walled off statistically as people who do.
I could be 100% off base, but it has worked for me so far in my 33 years of age.

If you’ve truly had the flu, then it’s difficult to understand why you’re not motivated to get the flu shot every year. Genuine influenza cases are debilitating. Many people mistake a bad, persistent cold for the flu. They are distinctly different, however.
I had flu once, too, and that was as close to dying as I can imagine. I promised myself that I would never experience that again so I decided to be as healthy as I can be and get the flu shot every year. My immune system is as fortified against flu viruses as humanly possible now.
For your edification, if you did have the flu once, you are somewhat more resistant to suffering its worst effects again, at least for a while. Your immune system has created antibodies that will guard against that strain for a long time. Not indefinitely, however. Those antibodies will also work against other strains, too, if only minimally.
An exception would be a novel bird flu virus that has crossed into the human population. If H5N1, for example, suddenly appeared in humans it would be devastating for anyone without any exposure to the flu or ordinary flu vaccines and dangerous even for those who have been previously infected or inoculated. Those who have a long history of flu shots would have the best chance of surviving if no specific vaccine for H5N1 was made available.

Don't let your guard down: The US flu season is expected to continue for several more weeks, with activity across the nation now elevated, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday. A flu shot is still recommended for those who have neglected to get one, but the CDC estimated this year's vaccine's overall effectiveness in preventing an infection at just 47%.
The shot's success varies based on your age, the CDC noted. Among children up to 17, its overall effectiveness against flu was 61%, while just 24% of adults 50 and older who received the shot gained protection against infection.

Such an interesting post. Yes, the more viruses you’re exposed to, the more resistant your immune system becomes to them. That’s taking the very, very difficult route, though.
Also, the residual effects of disease are cumulative. You are cutting your life short by allowing your body to experience disease after disease in this manner. Especially since most diseases like this are avoidable.

Why is it even a news story? Are they going to write a story every time someone doesn't get the flu shot and doesn't get the flu.
Every year there will be people who get the flu shot and those who don't. Every year out of those two groups there will be people who get the flu and those who don't. Getting the flu has to do more with the strength of your immune system and your cleanliness habits, than it does with the flu shot. Those with weak immune systems should get all the help they can, like the flu shot. Others don't necessarily need it. I haven't had the flu shot since I was a child, and I've gotten the flu once in that time. It wasn't that bad and I was over it in 3 days. Haven't gotten the flu since then, so now I should get the flu shot? That's just dumb. Get it if you need it or want it, otherwise mind your own damn business about it.

Should I link all the articles of folks who were injured by getting the vaccine? Would be much more than one case.

I've never had a flu shot and don't plan on it in the future.

This is an opinion. It might be bad for some or even a lot of people, but it's not always that way. Do you think people are diagnosing themselves, or that doctors are misdiagnosing it? The one time I had the flu, I was tested and diagnosed with it. I've had colds that were worse than that case of the flu. I remember leaving work around noon on a Tuesday and going straight to the doc office. I went back to work Friday morning perfectly fine. Never felt that bad throughout the entire thing. I know it's worse for many, but I'm just pointing out that your statement is an opinion and not at all factual.

Please do. "I got the shot and then I got the flu!"

We are required to get the flu shot at work and I've had a few coworkers claim this.

So every year they have to start vaccine development.
That's all I was saying. I don't think it's "hastily developed" because of procrastination. "Hasty" is just how it has to be, and as a result there have been some pretty bad missteps. 1976 and 2017 are the examples I'm aware of.
Now, if I were old and feeble, it might change the calculus here, but as things stand there's just no way I'm getting a flu vaccination, and it's not because I'm a "scum of the Earth anti-vaxxer". (Don't think you posted that, but someone did.)

A lot of things are. I have to get all kinds of shots (flu, pneumonia, shingles) because I have CLL.
My doctor is at least honest enough to tell me the flu shot isn't very effective simply because there are so many strains of flue and they keep mutating.

Condoms don't guarantee no pregnancy, either.

They're way more effective than the flu shot.

Again im not the expert at this by any means, but with roughly 2 gallons of OJ and 48 hours of rest I can pretty much kick anything to the curb at this time.
Luckily (knock on wood) I have never had a debilitating episode of the flu in my lifetime so far.
