Why does every product you buy now days want you to purchase a protection plan?

Doesn’t any company stand by their damn product anymore? No. I don’t want a 2 year protection plan for extra money. Manufacture a product that you can stand behind. Why does it fall on the consumer to now purchase additional protection for YOUR product. Yes I’m mad and poor.

Stupid tax. You'll never get money out of them if something goes wrong anyway.

It's gravy for them.

I recommend Condon Insurance.

The products are the same, they just count on morons to pay extra for protection plans.

Paid Warranties are for suckers. In all my life, warranties have always seemed to cover everything EXCEPT what was wrong with part that failed.
Bumper to bumper warranty. Power windows stop working. Electrical not covered.
Uh, windows are between the bumpers, man. I could give another example but after that happened 2-3 times, I decided I'd never pay extra for a shitty warranty that some hidden language would exclude me from.
Best Buy will try to sell you $25 protection on a $20 cable. There is a reason they push it so hard and that's because it's there #1 money maker.

They offer them because morons buy the plans and then never retain the paperwork required to make a claim. Free money. Same as gift cards. You know why they will sell you $100 of gift cards for $80? Because the redemption rate is around 40%. People lose them, forget to use them, etc. smart business.

Have you seen what people do to stuff? I’m surprised warranty and return policies are what they are...

Extended warranties aren't offered by the manufacturer, they are offered by the business selling them. You buy an appliance from Lowes or HD, they are covering the extended period, not Samsung. I generally don't buy them, except for my motorcycle, which has paid itself off already, with 2 years left. Also if you don't buy one on a lawnmower, you are an idiot. I worked as a small engine mechanic and I will tell you that $150 for 3 extra years is a steal compared to the $1000 you will pay repairing it in the 3rd or 4th year, when the spindle bearings inevitably go out.

The backend is where the extra profit is these days. Electronics, cars, anything electrical or mechanical,
etc.
etc.

Because companies have figured out a lot of people buying $100+ items are living paycheck to paycheck so they can make a shitload of money selling these warranties to the unwise.

More money for someone 99% of the population will never use
Posted on 1/6/20 at 9:43 pm to Boaty_McBoatface
If you pay more, they profit.

The only time it makes sense to buy a warranty (i.e. insurance) is when you can't afford to replace the item if something bad happens.
So a house, car, and medical really only meet these criteria.

I figure they have done the calculus and that the protection plan works out in their favor on average, so I usually trust their math and decline it, except in cases where I know I am going to abuse the product in a way that it wasn’t designed for. Like the $40 bagged vacuum I got from walmart that I use for construction debris and drywall dust. I jumped on the protection plan, but the damned thing won’t quit.

quote:Best Buy is the only place I've ever purchased a protection plan, and the one time I did it it worked out in my favor. Bought a refurbished Samsung TV for 500 when it retailed for 900. Added a one year protection plan for 50 bucks. Brought the TV back two days later when it wasn't working right and they gave me a brand new one. Ironically I saved $350.
