Yep - I make a turn like this almost every morning and I know it's incorrect but the 99% of the oncoming cars don't do it properly. It's kind of like the cluster frick that usually is a 4 way stop.

Every damn day I make that turn and more than half of the time, idiots on the other side, do it wrong. I can't tell you how many times I've had idiots honking at me and going hard with the hand signals, the whole time not knowing they are the idiot who can't make a legal left turn.

The second part of the equation is the guy waiting for you to make the turn needs to stay out of the intersection but half the time they pull up right behind you, thus blocking the guy on the other side of the street.

It's the same. The other cars just wait back in the turn lane so as not to block the other car crossing their lane. Once the car in front of them turns, then they can move up into the median and wait to turn....

Its not fricking hard.

I have only done it the wrong way once or twice because someone else was already in the wrong. I prefer to wait for them to clear the intersection so I can do it the correct way, provided it doesn't make things even more unsafe.

So you live in the part of America where all divided highways are only two lanes.

I've always done it the correct way. I love when I get funny looks from people that do it wrong.

I know what you're referring to and if people knew how to drive you could still do it the right way and prevent this. In the correct pic the next cars coming up aren't supposed to enter the intersection until those first two cars clear their turn.

If you're the second car that needs to turn you're supposed to stop with your blinker on in the forward-moving lanes of traffic and wait till the person in front of you clears the intersection for their turn.

the situation that drives me insane is if there are TWO lanes turning left with a traffic light, turning onto a two lane road and the car in the left lane turning cuts me off in the right lane when they make the turn. they should turn into the LEFT lane and the person in the right lane should turn into the right lane.

Doesn't it depend on local or state laws like whether median is wide or narrow. Ones that don't learn actual law and differences are the dumb ones.

The "correct" one is wide median in Texas, but for "narrow" you follow first one (similar to crossing in front on left turns at intersections with stop lights). Wide medians should also usually be marked with lane divider and stop sign before crossing over (but not always marked). Wide basically becomes a section of the street with defined & marked lanes and stop signs (crossing left to right in pic).

Most (but not all) narrow medians here have opposing left turn lanes (median is measured from inner most lanes including the left turn lanes) and If both cars pull up & angle over view is unobstructed. It's obstructed for both types of medians when multiple cars waiting in line behind to turn, and when cars from side streets (left to right in pics) with stop signs incorrectly think it's wide lane and cut off those with right a way turning left onto side streets.

quote:

The median width is measured between the inside of the left turn lanes, or if there is no left turn lane on an approach, from the inside through lane. Each median opening has two width measurements, with one measurement for each approach

You also have to follow each type of median for u-Turns meaning don't treat it like a wide for left turns but hug the median for u-Turns like it's a narrow even if no one there.

This pisses me off very much. Every time it happens, I just sit there and stare them down and cuss like a mad man. I will sit there while they try to inch out because they can't see around my truck. I really hope I get to see one of them get T-boned as they pull into traffic. Dumbass people.

First way is correct. Every time you turn left from a light you go to the inside, so why is it different at a median? Crossing cars iin that one situation is stupid and you then will block each other hence why common sense causes everyone to do it the first way.

YES!

Happens to me all the time. I have extreme lane discipline and people lose it when they go into a long wide turn like that.
