Is one neccesarily better than the other for a first handgun purchase? Not planning on concealed carrying, more for in home defense, target practice and plinking. I've shot both at the range and cant really tell a difference. The 45 might have a little more recoil but it also looked like I was shooting a slightly tighter group with the 45.

I was leaning 17 all the way before today but now I'm stuck again between these two. Anybody out there with either or both that can shed some light?

First handgun and you don't plan on conceal carry. Go with the full frame and get the 17

Literally the same frame lmao. To OP, Glock 45 gets my vote.

I have the 19x and I think the 45 is just a black 19x (not racist).

I love my 19x. It came with 3 mags and two of them hold 19 rounds.
Not sure the 45 comes with the same but I’d guess it does.

Same frame but shorter slide like a 19 right?!
I have a 17 and a 19, I prefer to shoot the 17 more than the 19 and shoot the 17 better.
If the OP shoots the 45 better then I would go with a 45.

The 19x and the 45 have the grip length of the 17 and the slide length of the 19

19x also has a lanyard loop. I don't think the 45 does. So if the OP likes to chain his gun to his hip, the 19x is the one.

I have Glock 17 and got 21. To me they just seem to shoot about the same as far as recoil. I like the 17 because it can hold more rounds and 9 mm ammo is cheaper in general compared to 45 caliber. My vote would be for the 17.

If your only options you are looking at is the 17 and 45, then I'd go with the 45. At least with the 45 you can conceal carry or just carry in general with a little more comfort. I have the 19x which I love. As for the lanyard loop, just remove it and if that void bothers you the get a plug for it. Some people don't like the grip on the 19x because the front of the magwell. That was easy for me and it's more. BLUF, find a store where you can lay hands on and see what's best for you.

If it's just for HD and target go with the longer sight radius of the 17.

I have the 45 and I really liked it. However, bought an Xcarry, which is the same gun basically in Sig and it just fits my hands better. I'd part ways with the 45 for a good price if you want to message me username@gmail.com

I'd probably consider a Glock 19 as well... It's easily my favorite Glock. Plenty big enough to shoot comfortably and still small enough to conceal if needed

No I'm not set on glock but it's all I've been considering and the only guns I've really put rounds through. I shite my buddy's 1911 a few times but I preferred the 9mm to the .45 acp.

That had to hurt...

If for just a range gun or home defense look at the 34.

It's shoots really, really good. It's a long slide.

I shoot it the best of mine but I have a pretty good trigger in it. The 19x is next. Then the 19 and then the 17.

You could look at the M&P2.0 or Sig P320 or if budget is a concern, look at the Canik TP9SF Elite One series. Canik's are damn sweet for the price!
