Golf "etiquette" and rules are why young people dont get into it

I agree with the underlying theme that its a gentleman's game and that you should respect the course and other golfers. Theres just so much small BS that people get worked up over that turn people off to it. Personally I love it but I also don't give a frick who tees off first or who pulls the pin and puts it back in and small stuff like that. Lighten up fricks. If you aren't a single digit your opinion means nothing anyways.

the teeing off and playing in order should all be abandoned in favor of ready golf. That should only be used in tournament play. I'm not aware of any etiquette regarding who pulls/replaces the pin... That just sounds dumb.
I don't get the rage about stepping in a through line, although I think that's mostly just pros.

I agree with you to a certain extent. When I started playing golf I was absolutely terrible (I still am, but that's a different story for another time). I would usually go play with a few people who sucked, like me, just for fun. There were old Marshalls that made playing suck at times. They would follow us around and just sit and watch us. We would let people play through when they caught up to us, so we weren't doing anything wrong. Just trying to enjoy playing. They made it very unwelcoming.

I’ve played in several tournaments where we agreed to play ready golf. Get ready and hit the damn ball.

That and country club douchebaggery

Cost has to be the leading cause, imo.
Golf has no more etiquette, rules, unspoken rules, or lingo than any other sport either to watch or participate in.
Think about the phrases guys throw out watching a baseball game and how awkward it would be if you knew none of them. Hunting and fishing would be the same for participation. The rules for when and how to hunt, what to buy, how to act.

Cost used to be a bigger issue. Golf is now cheaper hunting and baseball and soccer as far as family/kids activities go. That wasn’t always the case especially when we were all kids.

This is rich coming from the douchebag that doesn’t repair his ball marks or if he does, he uses a tee. Acting like you’re a single digit cap when I’m sure you play bogey golf at best.

The people I play with just stick a tee in the ground and go.
We leave the flag in for the most part.
We do try to be quiet and still while someone else is swinging or putting.

cost, course availability in BR, and opportunity cost keep me from playing more frequently.

Cost and time it takes to play a round at most places are big factors. I'm 59 and play ready golf and play pretty quickly. I hate being behind the 10 practice swings, line up putts from every angle possible, still shoot 90 groups. As for the etiquette, you can be courteous and still play at a good pace. I like to listen to music while I play but will turn it down if it bothers someone in the group. It should be a fun game but too often it isn't do to factors you can't control.

If you think etiquette is only deserved or can be taught by single digits then you are the problem. If more players would take the time to teach etiquette instead of scoff at bad etiquette, maybe you'd see a trend. Instead it ends up being the single digits with the bad etiquette and attitudes.

I think this has more to do with people not playing than anything else.
It is just not an easy game to pickup. It costs a ton of money and is really tough to get your game decent in a short period without lessons.

Courses in BR are cheap and always an open tee time somewhere. Get Golf Now and sign up for emails at any courses that have them. They are giving away golf in BR area.

Totally agree. I'm just saying tournament golf would be the only acceptable time IMO

This always pisses me off and it undoubtedly drives people away from the game. It's typically the worst at the public courses where the old marshals feel like they own the place. Instead of presenting a welcoming atmosphere, they go out of their way to follow you around. In my experience it's very rarely the younger inexperienced group that breaks the rules, it's generally the older group that feels entitled to do whatever they want.

I have always found the opposite (except at some semi-private clubs). I have seen the beer swilling younger groups drive the carts up to the greens, not fix divots, rake bunkers, and just be a nuisance more than the older guys. Rant finished, now get off my lawn!

Same. Most young guys I play with are very respectful. The younger, beer drinking crowd usually moves fairly quick as they aren’t overly concerned with over reading putts, etc.
It’s the older men that take forever purposely because it’s ‘their’ course and heaven forbid they let anyone play through or the public course ‘member’ assbag that doesn’t think anyone should be on the course if they aren’t a scratch golfer and get in his way.

There is the same amount of assholes playing golf that are involved with anything else you do in life. Driving to work, being in a hunting camp, fishing in the gulf, coaching a little league team, going to movies, etc. Nothing is immune to it unless you do something completely by yourself.
For some reason people act like golf should be the only thing completely immune to it.
