seeking ideas for a home made push pole for flatboat

im seeking ideas for a home made push pole for flatboat for marsh fishing in the shallows
i figure a 10ft length of 1" or 1 1/4" pvc should be fine for the pole itself but what sort of end to push off with is where im not sure about
i prefer to make something myself rather then just buy one, so has anyone out there ever made their own push pole and has any ideas?

This. Bamboo is another option. You can go somewhere like microskiff and get other ideas.
But there's a reason why the commercial push pulls are expensive, there's just no good cheap way to make them.

I'd just pony up and buy one, it sucks, but there are no good ways to make a decent one.

Maybe you could find a cheap used pole vaulting pole or something? Some aluminum conduit? No cheap way to do it if you're going out and buying stuff.

I used to buy an 1 1/2 or 1 1/4 fir pole from Morrison’s in Houma. You can put the commercial duck bill or a wood foot(my preference). Sand the pole real smooth so it slides easily.

There's this fiberglass DIY kit for $85. Max Gain
Fiberglass is serviceable but there are other preferred materials
Superstick looks like an interesting option as it telescopes and becomes more compact.
Superstick
General rule for pushpoles is that longer and lighter is generally better.
Keep an eye on craigslist or FB as used push poles do pop up from time to time

those swimming pool net handles are super light and extend over 10'. Put a push pole foot on it and you're gtg.

thanks guys
i figured how hard could it be to grab a pole and put a flat end on it
im thinking its only going to need to be like 10ft or so since im siting on the front deck seaty using it and not up on a platform.
i hadnt thought of some of the issues you guys raised so i'll probably give it a try with a treated 2x2 instead of pvc. it wont last as long but it wont bend as easy

A square pole ? I don’t think you are gonna like the results of that.

Yeah you can buy the 1' or 1 1/4' wooden dowel at hardware stores for something like $2/ ft. I know Home Depot has it and many of your local lumber yards, I don't think Lowe's carries it. Its for closets. Can probably find some bamboo on Craigslist or FB marketplace for cheap too.
Our flounder gigs are bamboo and they work fine for us, we usually go in a 14 ft flat boat and just use it to push pole us around. So its definitely serviceable.

My nephew makes them from pole vaulting poles.

I just got the duckbill head and used a wooded dowel from Home Depot

i have a router so i can round over the edges very nicely
i made a 8ft rigid dip net handle for crabbing from a 2x2 with router rounded corners. it fits and fells very secure in the hand even though its a completely different use then a push pole

I found an old pool net telescoping pole on the side of the road. A duck foot was around 10 bucks. It isn't good for heavy dude poling but it works for light stuff.
lowes link
I could drill it and put bolts/wing nuts through and it'd be a bit tougher.

I have a Superstick and I really like it for my limited use of a push pole

that sounds like a great idea too, this place never disappoints with the great helpful people with solutions
i really would like something water proof and i doubt i would be putting more then a few pounds of pressure on it. its a flatboat after all so its super easy to push around like nothing

im gonnna go with this and cut the net off leaving the flare end as the "foot" to push off with
its cheaper to buy this then just the pole itself

ya, im not going to be pushing the boat through mud so it doesnt need to be strong.
its mainly im shreading my trolling motor blades like crazy fishing in 8-10" of water after reds so i just need a way to move along that doesnt require paddling
i may still make the 1 1/4" pvc pole with a tee on the end since i can do that for just $10 but the main plus is its all plastic and should last forever
