4x16 vs 6x24 scope

Deciding between these two choices. moving up from my 3x9x50. I might be splitting hairs but this is going on a 7mm08 for deer with most shots between 50-150yds. A few times a year i have the opportunity to reach out to 150-250yds. Im leaning towards the 4x16x50mm because of the closer shots. The 6x24x50mm is $100 cheaper and ill probably never turn it past 16x for my needs. Any suggestions?

4-16 is plenty.

You're talking about wayyyyy too much scope if all you're hunting is deer out to 250 yards.
I run a 2-7x33 for most deer hunting applications. What's wrong with a 3-9x40?

Honestly for those ranges the good ole 3-9x40 works just fine. However, ff those are the only two options, definitely the 4-16.

Easily the 4x16 out of those two.
I have a 2.5-8 on my "big" rifle and I feel like 8x is plenty out to 300. I aim at plenty deer as far away as a mile, and I cant see ever needing more than 8x. I really like the weight savings of the small scope

I just put a 1-8x28 on an AR-10 in .308. Will easily be able to shoot it out to 400yds+ after I get used to it.

I'll prob be downvoted, but so be it. I realize high magnification on deer rifles is getting more popular, but I don't think that's what you need. Between those two choices, I'd get neither. For the hunting you just described, 16x, much less 24x, is not needed. Those scopes are going to be heavier, bigger, more expensive and have a reduced field of view at max power. 6x is a little much for 50 yards. Unless it's a really good sale, it's odd for a 6-24x to be significantly cheaper than a 4-16x. A 3-9x or 3-10.5x would be much better. If you really think you'll be shooting >250 yards, I might get a 4-12x. Most of my deer hunting handguns have 3-12x scopes, but I rarely go above 8x. even at longer ranges. I also swap the same scopes to other guns during the spring/summer for prairie dog hunting.
If that's the case, I'd just get a better quality 3-9x.

A few times this year i was looking at deer at 200yds in my 3x9 and felt i could have used more power. Personal preference i guess. Other than that i like my 3x9. for 50 - 120 yd shots. I know i will never need the 24x but for $100 cheaper i didn't know how the 6x compared to the 4x

For a swamp hunter like you I'd go the opposite way and get a 2-7x32 mm. Much lighter and more compact scope. 7x is plenty to shoot a deer at 200 yards and having the option to back down to 2x is incredibly nice in the swamp

I have a separate 3x9 for the swamp. Im talking for shots in Texas and Mississippi. I was looking at shots between 200-325yds this weekend. The 3x9 was maxed out in my opinion and if big boy came out i would have been hesitant.
My place in washington parish has lanes from 100-150yds too

Ah well that 4-16x should be plenty. It's nearly double the 3-9 on the top end. You'll want a bigger objective (52mm or so) so that you can still see late at higher zoom.

You will loose time at the end of the day w the 6x24. All things being equal, the 4x16 will work better in lower light conditions. Also field of view.

Different guns for different situations.
I have a box stand gun that’s heavy and a 18x Ziess on it. I like to be able to see age, points, etc at 250 yds not just be able to kill them. I use it when I hunt a few different stands that are big and comfortable.
I also have a rifle i use for climbing stands in the timber. It has a 3x9 on it and does great.
I wouldn’t want the big scope in the climber and I don’t want the 3x9 in the clear cut.
Use whichever fits you.

This is what im going for. I want to be able to see a buck at 250 decide if hes a shooter and see points.
Currently I have 2 7mm-08 x-bolts with 3x9x50. I want one with a longer range scope for clear cuts. ill keep one for hunting in timber.

I will say that I would focus on quality glass than only thinking higher top end magnification will let you see details such as points clearer. It's amazing what I can see with my nightforce at lower magnification than some of my other optics. I was skeptical until I got my first high end optic, but now I won't go back.

One of my favorite scopes is a Leupold vx5-HD 3-15x44
The glass is really good and has enough magnification to do what you're asking for.
But it's $900.

16 power is the minimum power scope I buy now for my deer setups unless it’s a super lightweight setup then I’ll go with some light. I prefer the higher magnification for checking antlers at several hundred yards away when I’m in the blind.
Glass quality is more important than magnification but I’ll give up the weight to have a
5-30x50 Swaro Z6 that almost acts as a spotting scope.
