That decision has left a void of quality depth today in the secondary
You should have outlined this post and then you would realize your argument makes no sense.
Missing on 1 CB doesn't have anything to do with safety depth.
And it sure AF doesn't have anything to do with:
quote:
Delpit is gimpy and is a poor tackler.
Which of course he isn't when he's healthy.
Or:

Jacoby Stevens
So, the most salient point of your post -
quote:
The question is what's Bill Busch as safeties coach, doing to get these inexperienced safeties up to speed, and playing at a higher level?
Okay, that is a good question. BUT HAS frick ALL TO DO WITH PATRICK frickING SURTAIN, JR. OR HIS RECRUITMENT.
Your thread is bad and you should be ashamed of it.

Kelvin Joseph transferring and Todd Harris getting hurt have hurt us bad.
These two, plus the puzzling development of Monroe is MUCH more significant than the OP's ludicrous premise.
We have corners. We DON'T have safeties. Patrick Surtain, Jr. is a corner. ONE corner at that.

The whole point is had we signed a 2-3 DB's that year instead of a swing and a miss with Surtain Jr., we would have had 2-3 more experienced DB's as sophomore's this season. Instead we have mostly freshmen and a few upper classman that aren't playing very well. Again, NEVER just recruit only 1 player only per position is all I was saying. We lack sophomore DB depth because of this decision.

We signed 5 DBs in 2017.
We signed Kelvin Joseph in 2018 (who was a CB/S tweener) and Kenan Jones who has moved to safety.
Provens was also an ATH who could have projected to DB.
Jaray Jenkins is yet another WR who may move to the defensive backfield.

Not because of recruiting Surtain. If he was on the team now IT WOULD CHANGE NOTHING.

Marcel Brooks is an OLB
Kenan Jones is in the transfer portal
Todd Harris has a season ending injury in Week 3
Our problems are much more tied to the fact that Kelvin Joseph transferred and Todd Harris got hurt. Not Surtain

Forgot about that.
We are thin AF at safety (a position Patrick Surtain DOES NOT PLAY, and WOULD NOT BE PLAYING FOR US IF ON THE ROSTER). We're like Kate Moss after a good "cigarette and purge break" thin.

Kelvin Joseph had 12 tackles and 1 pass defended last year. Saw him get beat when I was particularly watching him on several plays. Don't think we are missing much with him.

He was playing corner - his natural position is safety - even if he doesn't realize/accept it.

f we get Patrick Surtain, we most likely don't get Derek Stingley.
no, youd just see Fulton as the nickel, think about that.. where does your WR go? 4 first rounders in one defensive backfield... insane...

Eric Monroe not panning out hurts. Kid was the #1 safety recruit in the country and can't see the field. Imagine if he was playing like a #1 safety.
correct... have no idea what happened to him... or why he isnt playing now... but... gotta trust the coaches...

Eric Monroe - Can't seem to get on the field
Cam Lewis - Plays some
Jacoby Stevens
Grant Delpit
Todd Harris - Injured
Kelvin Joseph - Transferred
Maurice Hampton - Injured to start the year and hasn't yet seen the field
That's probably not enough safeties per year in the era of RPO.

Better coverage in the secondary, allowing lineman and LB's to get consistent pressure/sacks on the QB
Injuries to Delpit and Harris along with Joseph transfer have affected the secondary most.
Lack of pressure on the QB has allowed QB's time to pick apart the defense. I don't think our secondary is the weak link in our defense but you are entitled to your opinion. I would think coach "O" would be nice to you but would quickly dismiss your take, he knows the problem

And looked good before he got hurt.

LSU has two shut down corners, but it is the consistent play from the safeties, or the other corners, that is hurting the defense. Delpit is gimpy and is a poor tackler. Jacoby Stevens makes a few plays here and there but is out of position much of the time.
You are not seeing the whole picture. Why do our DB's look like shite missing tackles they should not be having to make. Go back and look at the Ole Miss busted plays and you will see it is the LB's that are continuously out of position and not making plays that should be made.

Aranda is the weak link.....pitiful.

The issue is that LSU’s front 7 recruiting has been a big whiff for a few years now
