LSU Defensive Issues: Blame it on Patrick Surtain Jr.'s Recruitment

A couple of years ago the LSU coaching staff went all in on one DB Patrick Surtain, and he spurned LSU for Bama. That decision has left a void of quality depth today in the secondary, along with some early departures, that is causing the issues on defense in 2019. LSU has two shut down corners, but it is the consistent play from the safeties, or the other corners, that is hurting the defense. Delpit is gimpy and is a poor tackler. Jacoby Stevens makes a few plays here and there but is out of position much of the time. Marcel Brooks, Jay Ward, Cordale Flott, Raydarious Jones, and Maurice Hampton are freshman. Kenan Jones is a sophomore. Todd Harris and Eric Monroe are both juniors, so one would expect their play to be better than it has been. LSU is known as DBU, but this season it's the secondary that is the weakest overall link of this team. Aranda doesn't have much to work with experience wise with the secondary. The question is what's Bill Busch as safeties coach, doing to get these inexperienced safeties up to speed, and playing at a higher level?

Eric Monroe not panning out hurts. Kid was the #1 safety recruit in the country and can't see the field. Imagine if he was playing like a #1 safety.

If we get Patrick Surtain, we most likely don't get Derek Stingley.

I'll take that trade off 10/10

Kelvin Joseph transferring hurt us bad. I know his off the field actions weren't the best, but the dude can play.

I would agree, but a team can never just recruit one player for any position. If a recruit is afraid to compete for a position, then let him go elsewhere. LSU has never just recruited 1 RB, and said to hell with trying to get anyone else. Just doesn't make good sense is all.

We had 23 recruits in that cycle i believe and picked up 2 transfers to go up to 25. I think that terrance alexander must of made up for surtain. May be wrong.

Yeah, this one is the biggest head scratcher. I cannot understand how he is not seeing the field more. It seems like he has been on the team for 6 years.

Pretty sure it is Aranda's problem, teach these kids how to wrap up, team them more man to man not Patrick Surtain from two years ago on why the defense is sleeping half of these games

How so? It's not a strength of the defense this year. Better coverage in the secondary, allowing lineman and LB's to get consistent pressure/sacks on the QB isn't happening with a weakness at the safety position? So what's your take?

I was expecting him to be solid on defense this year. The fact that he can't get on the field much at all sucks. I thought he was going to be a stud.

Losing Marvin Wilson hurt more. Hope he’s enjoying his losing seasons in Tallahassee.

Joseph is worse because I’m not sure with get Stingley if we get Surtain.

Joseph would be a stud in this defense and would help us out so damn much.
