He is left handed but gun doesn’t need to be a left handed. Been looking at

Franchi Affinity
Stoeger M3020
Tristar G2 Viper youth

Budget is no more than $600

The Tristar version that comes with two stocks and a barrel extension is interesting. That way he can use it when he is bigger too. Note that it is the same gun as the Mossberg SA-20.

I would probably go with the Franchi Affinity.

My son has an Affinity compact and it’s been flawless
However, new they’re more than your $600 limit

I know you didn't mention it and lots of hate for new Remington on the OB, but I picked up a used (barely) 1187 youth 20ga last year. Turned it into a Turkey gun. Love it.

I got a Browning BPS pump in 20g from a pawn shop around that age. Still a favorite to pull out the cabinet to this day. Also much lighter than my beloved Remington 1100 12 gauge

I’ve been shooting Benelli, Beretta and Winchester semi auto guns for the last 15-20 years. I bought a Stoeger M3500 for my wife. It’s a very nice gun for the price. I actually use it over my Winchester when she doesn’t come with me. Now that I know Stoeger has a 20ga I’ll be getting one now for dove hunting.

Got the franchi affinity 20 for my wife, and I loved it. I sold my A5 and replaced it with the franchi 12. Smooth shooting gun, can’t go wrong with it.

Those are all good choices - I would lean more to the Franchi or Stoeger (Franchi is probably just a little better gun and the Stoeger is probably just a little better value), but I think a good price on the Tristar might sway me.

They're that close.
