Does anyone have any stories that your family tries to hide?

I hired a genealogist in Germany to research my family. He got a lot of records from the Lutheran national archives. He informed me that when my great great great great grandparents got married the priest would not allow the church bells to be rung because he learned that they had hooked up before matrimony.

No one told my dad he was adopted until he was 40 because his biological mom was a prostitute. I thought it was funny, personally.

We obviously don't know who his dad was but I like to call him Grandpa John.

I dated a girl in high school who found out that her “brother” that was deceased was really her father and she was raised by her grandparents who pretended they were her parents. They were in their 80’s when we were 17-18 years old. She was batshit crazy.

Yes.

My wife and I have a big secret we've been keeping from our kids.

Every year at Christmas we tell them Santa will bring them presents if they were good all year.

The secret?

It's all a lie. It has been me and the wife buying them the presents this whole time.

I found out my great-great grandmother had my great grandfather as an unwed teen mother. I found my great grandfather on the 1910 census under his mom's maiden name as newborn. Sometime between 1910 and 1915 my great-great grandmother met and married the guy with surname I have today.

I don't think anyone knew because his birth certificate was closed up until about a decade ago. I had to request it from the Michigan office of Vital Statistics. I don't even know if my great grandfather knew.

I found out at 20 that my dad wasn’t my biological dad. I don’t know who is and my mother died before we ever discussed it.

My granny (dad's mother) got knocked up when she was 15 years old. Her and my grandpa got married soon after she learned she was pregnant. Not sure it was that big of a secret. I knew how old my grandmother was and around about how old my aunt was and never really thought about it until it was talked about soon after my grandmother was put in a home.
