I didn't know I was adopted by my dad until I was about 11. My parents adopted my cousin, raised her as my sister and didn't tell her until she was a teenager. Technically, they only told us because we found out.

I have a relative that got pregnant at a young age, got sent off to one of those homes for young pregnant girls. She had the baby, gave it up for adoption, came back home, and the family tried to act like nothing happened.
No one in the family said anything to anyone, even most family members (even other siblings) were not told about it.

Yes.

My wife and I have a big secret we've been keeping from our kids.

Every year at Christmas we tell them Santa will bring them presents if they were good all year.

The secret?

It's all a lie. It has been me and the wife buying them the presents this whole time.

Spoiler alert, a-hole

Oh, I forgot. My aunt had another baby before my "sister", a couple of years younger than me. Gave him up for adoption. His parents who raised him told him he was adopted, but didn't give him contact info to meet his birth mom (I totally get it). After they died, he found the adoption papers and found us a couple of years ago. Strange thing, he was born in LA, but ended up living in the same state all of my family lives in now, so they were able to visit. They all now keep in touch. Unfortunately, my aunt died of cancer before he or my sister found out.

My great uncle is in his 80s, and lives in West Virginia .. about 20 or 25 years ago, i forget exactly how it went down, but he found out that he had been adopted, and that his biological father was a McCoy, of Hatfield-McCoy feud fame.. At first it was a shock, but now he’s really into the history of their whole thing.

My mom's cousin had an affair with her boss back in the late 1940's. She got pregnant and the guy was married and didn't want to have anything to do with her. Not sure how it played out but she had the child. Of course it was years later when I found out and was blown away.

Downer Warning...

Shortly after I met the family of a young father that had just killed himself, they told me that once they began talking, they discovered they were all being treated in some way for depression or anxiety. The deceased wasn't. They were all ashamed to talk about it until the tragic catalyst. This was in the wake of Katrina.

Not really a family secret, per se, but when i was a kid in NOLA , my Mom had a friend who would have conjugal visits with Carlos Marcello in prison.. most of you probably are familiar with him, but for those who arent, or are too young to remember- he was the New Orleans mafia boss who most credible experts believe was responsible for the assasination of JFK, not Oswald.

So based on your experience, do you think they should have told you when you were younger, or was it best that they waited until you were a little older and could understand better?

Found out a couple of years ago that the wife’s (no pics) great-grandfather was a member of the Waffen SS. He was executed by Tito’s government in Yugoslavia for war crimes committed in Bosnia.

We didn’t know until after my grandfather died that he had an older brother who had died only several hours after he was born. We found the birth/death certificate among my grandfather’s papers after he died. Even my grandmother (no pics) didn’t know about it.

I don’t understand. Are your kids on the naughty list or something?

The people who raised me as their person weren't really my people.

Didn't learn until they were all dead.

Talk about a punch to the gut. Makes you question every belief you've ever had.
