Let's say you're putting together a quote for someone and after punching everything into your calculator, it shows the total to be 400.8545. Do you tell the customer the total is 400.85 or 400.86?

Most proposals I look at round just like you would in grade school math. So for your example, I would expect to round down.

500
Why would you ever quote that close.

$409. I don't sell shite where pennies matter.

How many significant digits does your company want you to round?

20% extra for nothing? Hope putting cost together isn't your day job.

$401. Only Poor’s deal with coins

500.86 and let the AP clerk to cut me a check for an extra $100.01 in commission.

contingencies. Plus, is this a rough budget bid or a final bid.
I still would round up based solely on nothing coming together perfectly.

That's great. If you're 20% over with absolutely nothing to justify, I will laugh at your cost and move on with my day.

Be a good salesman and charge them $400.

If we're talking about a estimating a door, I'd agree. Depends on what is being estimated.

I feel like OP is doing more than just a rough back of the napkin guess on a cost.
Based on that, randomly throwing in that much extra as "contingency" is a sure fire way to not sell very much.

That is a very generic statement to make when you have no idea what kind of service OP is providing
For Example: I know someone who does wedding flowers - typically gets 1/3 of the total fee as her profit after costs / labor and can pretty much book as much as she wants throughout the year.
