All my life I've eaten my gumbo with potato salad. Tonight we had Dinner at a local restaurant and I had the envee for gumbo. Looking over the menu I seen they also had sweet potatoes as a side item. I remember reading on here that some folks eat sweet potatoes as a side to gumbo. I decided to try it out and must say it was very good. Its not going to replace potato salad for me but it was a very good combination.

It’s awesome when the gumbo has tomatoes in it and it’s a nice gumbo with shrimp and sausage and chicken and crab. It’s the only way to eat an excellent gumbo like that.

What's the point? It changes the taste of the gumbo. If gumbo is good, why change that flavor? Eat gumbo with potato salad on the side. Why mix them? It's like putting french fries on a burger, or folding a piece of pizza over a wop salad and eating it.

It’s good. I don’t care what anybody says or if it’s Cajun enough. It tastes good.

Grew up in Acadia Parish. Sweet potatoes in gumbo regularly from mid ‘60’s (as far back as I can go). Never had/heard of/tried potato salad in or as a side for gumbo until last few years in BR area and it’s ok as a side. For me it’s a no go stirred in and best for seafood gumbo (yeah, no tomatoes).

I’ve had gumbo served over mashed potatoes instead of rice before. We were at a hunting camp outside of Villa Platte and made due with what we had. It worked very well actually.

I got great cracklins and hot sausage poor boy the next day too.

sweet potato in gumbo is better than potato salad. like you.....i've always had potato salad until i discovered the sweet potato. it doesn't melt in the gumbo and it's all i do now.

There is a feature article in the Washington Post about Gumbo. No mention of tomatoes or potatoes salads
