yes, this is a really big political statement.
Not really. The US doesn’t recognize Taiwan, and some graphics dude pulled an image from somewhere and this was the result. The fact that this isn’t being discussed hardly anywhere should let you know that this isn’t really a big deal

quote:American reaction to the statement has very little to do with the reality that it is a very significant political statement regarding that region. While your average American may not be knowledgeable about it, Taiwan and the other regions relevant care a whole frick ton.
Really big huh?

Specifically about ESPN? Because that’s what this thread was about

we dont recognize taiwan because to recognize taiwan, we would have to also recognize that taiwan has sovereignty over mainland china as well. which we obviously arent going to do
we do not formally recognize taiwan, but we also do not recognize as china having sovereignty over taiwan. we have a weird relationship with taiwan but in no way do we recognize chinas sovereignty over it

quote:The thread is a about a political statement made by ESPN via that map. The center point of discussion is the political statement, which Taiwan certainly cares about the meaning behind said statement. Whether Taiwan and crew pay enough attention to ESPN to get heated over this is another discussion.

You are veering this way off course. We’re discussing ESPN posting the map. I just added that part in there because y’all are acting like it’s some travesty when there are only a handful of nations that recognize the boundaries of Taiwan.
We are discussing a leftist corporation, who supports leftist causes, and is the leftist mouthpiece of some sitting elected US socialist, communist officials. Do you think the Taiwanese people care about the map or the policy more?

so how do you feel about the SCS part of that map?
How do you feel about Taiwan making the exact same claims as mainland China over the entire SCS?

please tell me you understand the difference between someone making a claim of ownership and a third party giving recognition of someones ownership to something. please

It is a travesty in the sense that this is little more than going along with China, but as I said, your average American isn't particularly aware of this topic, much less cares (referring to the border disputes).
quote:As I implied but didn't explicitly state earlier, I'm not sure how Taiwan feels about this because:
We are discussing a leftist corporation, who supports leftist causes, and is the leftist mouthpiece of some sitting elected US socialist, communist officials. Do you think the Taiwanese people care about the map or the policy more?
1) We haven't heard them peep up on this
2) I do not recall a precedent in the past of them paying attention to American based companies making political statements that are relevant to them.
At the end of the day, they care about the border dispute, and as long as nations:
1) Stay out of it
2) Side with them
They're good with it. A random corporation in America on the other hand? Beats me.
ETA: I think you and I agree on this more than we both saw earlier in this thread, and I was taking a more high level view approach due to comments on US views on Taiwan and the like, so we likely were on different pages altogether.
