Cliff and Rehage were definitely two of my favorite football players. I think Cliff weighed about 180 lbs. I saw him hit Boyd Dowler, 6'4" 240 lbs, Redskin TE, so hard that Dowler limped slowly off the field and Harris never missed a play.
Those guys were tough.

He was also a damn good free safety.

Intercepted a deflected pass to seal an LSU win vs Notre Dame in 1985.

quote:

He was like a far less talented Jarvis Landry or Michael Clayton on kickoffs-but the results were the same, he would just blow people up.
quote:

He had to have a special helmet made because he always led with the crown of his helmet. The guy was concussed for about 2 years straight until his equipment was adjusted.

Today, he’d be perpetually disqualified for targeting.

He had four concussions, one year, IIRC.

But he loved nothing more than leading with his helmet, and causing concussions in other people.

quote:

He wasn’t just a special teams guy either he was a starter and an NFL player for the Giants.

Yup -- blew a knee his senior season and still ended up with the Giants for a year.

One of the most entertaining Tigers, EVER.

I remember Ryan O’Neal with a similar style of play on kickoff coverage in early 2000’s. Kickoffs were a blast to watch as he would always absolutely destroy someone on every one. Sometimes it was even the ball carrier.

Rehage is a great guy.

JUST FYI

*He played for Belichick/Saban when he was with the New York Giants. I read somewhere that Belichick said he was the hardest hitter he had ever seen. I cant locate the article but there are other quotes out there about Rehage from Belichick.

*Allegedly, Saban offered Rehage a DB coaching job at LSU when he was 1st hired. When Saban left, Bellichick told him if he would have taken the job he would have been the next head coach.

I know, I know....Thanks for posting Steve

Rehage was the only guy I ever saw who tried to start a fight while injured and on crutches on the sideline. Against Tulane I believe. Opponent roles out of bounds and almost upends Rehage on his crutches. Steve starts kicking the guy and it almost got wild. That might have been the night it did get crazy late in the game.

Didn’t he knock himself on one play? Man was special.

I was at the game when we played Tulane and both sidelines emptied to one of the biggest fights I have ever seen. I saw Rehage take of his helmet in the south end zone and crack it over the head of one of the Tulane players. How that Tulane kid didn’t die right there in the end zone I’ll never know. Rehage was viscous.
