I'm the exact same way. Metairie is a really cool track and you'll enjoy yourself. It's actually the course that got me really interested in golf course architecture after I played it for the first time. I remember thinking while playing it, "hmm this Seth Raynor guy was onto something" haha. It's a much different experience you get than playing nearly any other course in LA.

You're making me want to play NOCC.
But my real takeaway: if those are the top clubs, private/public, there just isn't a lot of great golf in the state.

I've just heard those four courses mentioned as the best in the state usually. I actually hate the layout at Oakbourne, so I'd probably prefer NOCC

Flat land and poor economic conditions are typically indicative of shitty golf

What do you care about the layout at Oakbourne? Just wondering, it's one of my favorites

I agree that Oakbourne has a really good layout other than 18

think Squire is a better design by a touch, but I'm a huge Fazio fan
Fallen Oak is better than Squire, it’s a Fazio, it’s way better than NOCC, not arguing with you but I don’t understand your love for NOCC, it isn’t that great compared to other private golf courses in the state unless you wanna brag about $ and exclusiveness, maybe I’m confused? I know several NOCC members and they don’t have this frame of mind or thoughts like you do......are you a member there?

It's not that exclusive. I think it's a good golf course that almost always in great shape. I also have always loved the bunkering and scenery. I am not a member no am I affiliated with the club in any way. What is your home course?

Oakbourne is one of my favorite courses. It is a love/hate relationship. I love to play it, but I never play well there except for a couple of times. I am actually thinking about joining next spring or sooner.

Has to be the best designed course in Louisiana?
I haven't played it in a while, but when I played it I thought it was one of the most narrow courses I've ever played. You are constantly hitting out of the trees. And, while you can usually find you ball because you weren't dealing with "forests," it was a pain in the a$$ hitting from tree limbs.

they just have a number of holes I really don't like out there. Too many holes requiring you to move it one way or another. All the golden age fans in this thread should be able to agree that a hole should present options and not require a particular shot. Oakbourne has a number of really good holes but 2, 10, 12, 18 are all bad holes imo. I also think it's overly tight on a number of holes

18 at Oakbourne is such a let down. How is Oakbourne doing as a club?
Posted on 10/4/19 at 9:45 am to icegator337
Was was the last time you have been out there. I was there last weekend and commented on how much more open it appeared. They pruned a lot of the trees.

I'm fairly certain Oakbourne is doing well. I'm also planning on doing their out of town membership once my house is completed this spring. That's assuming I still play golf outdoors after three new sim room is built

It's been a while since I was out there. Probably haven't played it since this spring. Most of my complaints would be easily addressed with pruning and removing trees a couple trees, so it could be different than what I'm remembering.

The renovation post Katrina was very well done at NOCC. The Board brought Steve Melnyk and Curtis Strange in to play the course and give advice on a renovation. Melnyk belongs to an old CC in Jacksonville and they brought in an architect to do the renovation. That's the guy NOCC went with and he did a fantastic job.
Most important is when they surveyed the property they found a 12' elevation change that went diagonally across the property from the 8th tee to the 10th green. The course drains unbelievably well and is always in tip top shape. The greens are very quick and small.
