Not sure what was all that worse about his hit vs the hit the Pats did against Josh allen

That guy will get fined too.
Maybe even a suspension

Burfict’s is this long just because he has a history of it

That hit yesterday was a checklist of what not to do in today's NFL. He:

--Launched into a defenseless player.
--Led with his head.
--Dropped the crown of his helmet into the other player's helmet.

I've seen Burfict since he was at ASU. Dirty hits are his standard.

Jones turned him head and leaned with his shoulder and didn’t lower his head while Allen was going to the ground

LINK

Doyle was already on the ground and Burflict lowered down the crown of the helmet directly to make the helmet to helmet contact

LINK

Also player history has a lot to do with the length of the suspension while the head of NFL officials stated Jones hit did not reach the level that would trigger an ejection or suspension.

Burfict is probably the only player in any sport that I’ve actually wished he’d get hurt. Would be great if someone blindsided him, helmet straight to the chin, knock him the frick out and in the process he breaks his leg so bad he can never play again.

Juju Smith Schuster sure as hell tried.

You have to be kidding me on that Pats hit.

I don't even like the Bills, but I just knew they wouldn't do anything to the guy on the Pats.

Yeah, his teammate was just holding the guy, forward motion stopped, and he drills him head to head.

But he plays for the Pats, so its all good.

If someone on the Bills hit Brady like that, they would be out.

PS - I like the Pats. If they won the SB every season I wouldn't give a rat's arse.

They called a penalty

Forward motion was not stopped, he was extending for the first down.

Brady isn’t trying to play runningback 10 yards down the field. Simply wouldn’t be in that position.

Here’s a video of Brady getting lit up by the Bills if that makes you feel better

In fact, the hit prevented the QB from picking up the 1st down. I was kind of shocked watching the game live that they even called that at all. QB was not defenseless and was a runner, same as any other runner at that point.

ETA: The hit prevented the first down run. Obviously his momentum was not stopped.

LINK

Yeah...it was a brutal hit, but he was a runner who himself put his head down to pick up yards, and ran into a guy faster and stronger than him. It's physics.

Ok what is defenseless than?

Because the guy Burflict hit isnt even being touched by another player. So is he defenseless? I truly dont know how one gauges that

I think if you lead with the head on a player that is already being tackled/on the ground they are going to be considered defenseless

You want my opinion, or the rule? I have no idea what the rule states, so I'll give you mine as best I can.

I'd say that a player who's head is turned...say a potential tackler who gets blind sided by a guy running away form the play to take out a guy following the play.

A receiver in the process of making a catch that is exposed. Basically hits that used to keep receiver from extending going across the middle of the field and safeties used to dream of.

A player in the grasp of another player whose forward momentum is stopped and a guy comes in full blast high for no reason at all.

BTW...I hadn't commented on the Burfict hit, but I'd say it was worse by a long shot. In that case the receiver was n his knee. He could have either put his hand on him and he'd have been down, or he could have run his arse over with his shoulder. Instead, he lowered his head directly into the receiver's helmet. Looked like target practice.

I do think the Burflict hit is worse, absolutely

But a seasons long suspension seems a little aggressive considering some other hits that dont even get a game suspension.

If they do it in the name of his history that would be different and I would not take issue with that

This is exactly why they did it

I think if you lead with the head

I think this is what it all boils down to...the problem is the equipment. This is kind of a pet peeve of mine, and folks know I like to hop up on soap boxes here...

We get these hits BECAUSE the helmets are hard and they have face masks. That's it. Ask anyone who played both organized football with pads and tackle football with no pads and ask them if they tackled differently when their own head was exposed.

Of course! A hard helmet with a protective mask allows a player to lower his head and put his face in a position where it would otherwise be at severe risk. We keep getting hist like these, because both the runners and the tacklers feel safe lowering their heads into each other.

CSB: My late father was, as he told it, the last player in the city of New Orleans who wore the old style leather helmet back in 1952 for Jesuit. They had switched to what he called Oklahoma style helmets which were just plastic shells with canvas straps inside with no masks and he heated them so he stuck with the leather one. Any time you'd see one of these hits and people grousing about it he'd laugh and explain how it was because guys weren't afraid anymore of losing teeth or getting their noses broken.

Look, I criticize NFL discipline a lot, but that letter is all facts.

Puts the player representatives in a tough spot. I know their job is to make sure these players get as much money as possible but it is also their job in part to make sure their players don't all leave the game with scrambled brains.
