We've identified the 50 most miserable cities in the US, using census data from 1,000 cities across the country, taking into consideration population change (because if people are leaving it's usually for a good reason), the percentage of people working, median household incomes, the percentage of people without healthcare, median commute times, and the number of people living in poverty.

Often, these cities have been devastated by natural disasters. They've had to deal with blight, and with high crime rates. Economies have struggled after industry has collapsed. These cities also tend to have high rates of addiction.

The state with the most miserable cities was California, with 10 in the top 50. New Jersey was second with nine, and Florida had six.

Louisiana didn't make the list, nice.

And yes I see Shreveport. I stand by my statement.

I can sadly attest to quite a few of these. List is solid. Ellick couldn’t have possibly missed the Top 50 by much.

There’s a lot of truth and accuracy in this list.

At my previous job I had a client in Warren. It wasn't that bad. I'd live there over Jackson, MS or Youngstown.

calling BS on Cleveland .... working there for a few months and it's has some great neighborhoods with good food, a great music scene and very little traffic.

No to mention a world class museum, symphony and pro sports teams.

If I were going somewhere worse than Beaumont, Port Arthur would be it.

And Harlingen is one of the better towns in the valley. Brownsville I get, but I’d go with San Benito, Donna, Mercedes, Weslaco, Pharr. Edinburg, La Féria, Hidalgo, etc well before Harlingen.

Only reason Jackson, Ms isn't higher is because ignorance really is bliss

Shreveport isn’t bad for a medium sized town. Nothing special but it has casinos, good hunting/fishing, etc. Can think of many worse places

How the frick did Beaumont not make that list?

They were nice to the Chicago metro by only including Gary. There are a few others that probably belong like Harvey or Calumet City.

You know it’s a sad town when this is the entire Wikipedia description;

quote:

Harvey is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States, and a south suburb of Chicago. The population was 25,282 at the 2010 census. The city suffers from high levels of unemployment (22.0%), poverty (33.2%), and crime..

EDIT: missed Cicero, that definitely belongs

Cleveland is a fun town as long as you do not go east. Some great nightlife and fun bars.

For the number of plants that exist in the area I have never seen a more lifeless place.
