I always use a tee because I seem to make a little crisper contact with a tee.

What is the advantage of no tee?

I believe Arnold Palmer said “you only get 18 chances to give yourself a perfect lie”

I like to chop the ground with my club like Trevino and put the ball on the raised edge like a tee

I can’t afford to play courses with grass in the tees so tee it up.

Find a broken half tee.

I like the little push pin tees for par 3s.

Yep. And Nicklaus said to take Fat and Thin out of play with a tee. I never see modern tour pros not teeing it either. That should tell you everything you need to know

Been struggling with a tee this year. My divot is not forward enough. So, if the tee box at issue has nice cushy grass where the ball sits up, I do not use a tee.

If you're not teeing it up at every possible opportunity, you're really not qualified to be playing the game at all.

Under 175 yards - no tee

The problem with no tee is consistency of your lie. Are you playing off hardpan or thick grass. .both of which can affect quality of contact, ball flight, and distance control. If you have it teed up you have the same lie every time. I don't think it should be teed any higher than what a good lie in the fairway would provide, though.

That's quite possibly the dumbest thing I have read on any of these forums. Qualified?

I believe it was Jimmy Demaret that said the difference between golf professionals and ams was that the pros always used a tee.

If I can’t tee it up on some taller grass patch then I’ll use a tee but I like taller grass spots for par 3s and also for tee boxes where I’m hitting hybrid or 3 wood

Tee it but have it snug to the ground to give the ‘perfect lie’

Except for those Open Championship courses in the UK, you never see tour pros play a course where every shot on the tee or fairway isn't on a rich, loamy turf that comes up in perfect dollar bill size divots, either. Most tour courses are pampered, over indulged golf course fantasies, not the everyday courses struggling to get by. I played the TPC layout in Houston a week before the Shell Open just before they closed it off to play. Every shot had perfect divots and the balls hit the greens with incredible spin.

The next week, I played Bridlewood in DFW area and the grass was green and lush on top, but hard as nails underneath and I couldn't get the same sort of divot out of the turf and spin on the ball.

On the rare occasion I find myself coming off the tee box with a wedge I will go sans tee. 9 iron or better and I'm teeing it up.
