Sounds like they run an excellent summer jobs program for kids.

“Jacques-Imo Cafe has shelled out over $55,000 in fines for violating multiple child labor laws of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

One of the fines stem from the restaurant employing a 13-year-old to work in the kitchen. That boy sustained third degree burns when he tripped while carrying a vat of hot oil from the deep fryer

The investigation also found that this minor, along with a 15-year-old employee, worked beyond the hours permitted for employees less than 16 years old.

Minors worked past the evening hour limit of 7:00 p.m. during the school year, or 9:00 p.m. from June 1 through Labor Day, when they worked as late as 1:00 a.m.

The minors also worked more than 40 hours per week, more than 8 hours on a non-school day, more than 3 hours on a day when school is in session, all in violation of the law.”

Maybe it’s the sweat from those 13 year old workers that makes the cornbread so good.

No shite. I worked 40 hours a week during the summer when I was 15-16 years old.

That's just lazy

A 16 year old can legally work 48 hours a week in the summer. 14 and 15 year old 40 hours a week.

How much of this money goes to the child to help him in his struggle? What actually happens to this money? Those issuing fines should not have a financial interest in issuing fines.

Probably agreed to it after the kid begged or lied. Unlikely they intentionally put the kid to work.

It seems like this wouldn't have been a problem had it not happened during the school year. IMO, a 13 year old shouldn't be working 40+ hours during any time of the year. I could see 30 hours at 13 if it's spread out right, but not 40. And definitely not until 1 am. no matter what time of year it is.
