The NBA Board of Governors passed a stricter package of measures to enforce compliance with tampering and salary cap circumvention, league sources tell ESPN.

Just how much of the NBA's complete proposal was approved in BOG vote is still unclear. There had been apprehension on approving the random team audits. Adam Silver has a news conference soon in New York.

Adam Silver on tampering punishments: "Suspending executives...taking away draft picks....voiding contracts...All those provisions are on the table. The ultimate goal is compliance." Silver says fining teams can often be the least effective avenue to rules compliance.
GM's and agents do believe free agency will be impacted. How much? We'll see. But both sides more apprehensive on negotiating/agreeing to deals ahead of June 30 start. One GM said, "I'll follow the rules -- until I find out others aren't and I'm at a competitive disadvantage."

Adam Silver confirms that he does now have the ability to take people's communication devices if he chooses to do so. Has said multiple times he "does not want to take people's devices." That, however, is different than saying he won't.

What worries team officials: If evidence of tampering isn't found on those devices, what else could the NBA discover that could be deemed an issue for that individual or team? The NBA's an information business, and people want to protect their information.

NBA's been wild, wild west in recent years. Few feared repercussions in chasing free agents, or chasing deals for clients. Some abide by rules more closely than others; most live in grey. Something had to change. Small markets still most bothered by player-to-player tampering.

Like evidence of Mark Cuban enabling sexual harrasers?

So after it’s done, now they are going to punish it moving forward. Typical. Let them cheat and then say if anyone else goes it, they are in for a tough time.

In regards to tampering, they can make the penalties as strict as they want. It doesn't matter if they dont evforce

They can suspend GMs and take away draft picks.
If you start taking 1st round draft picks away, teams are going to comply.
They can also void the contract.

How to fix tampering rule? Let everyone tamper!

Eliminate salary caps. They would come with a host of its own issues though

There will always be Superstars going into free agency. The race for Giannis is coming in two years. Not to mention, the AD saga was a terrible look for the association.
You can't have superstars with 2 years left on their contract act an arse and be rewarded by handpicking their preferred destination

seems these gms, etc would do a better job using back channels. Maybe they will now.

Sounds like they are going to, albeit in the most obvious of cases.
Good thing for the Lakers that Magic is no longer an exec.

My favorite version of this would have been “all of the above.”
Execute the Pelicans-Lakers deal then void AD’s contract and strip LA’s remaining picks.

The NBA seems to be the only professional sports league in America who has their shite together.

This is an Adam Silver special. Extremely strict and harsh penalties for something no one will ever get caught doing.
Executives, other than magic Johnson, don't tamper. It's the players. The NBA will never disallow the players from talking to each other. I'd bet all of zero teams get popped under this new rule.

It could slow down free agency, which will probably be the biggest impact we see from this rule.

Silver is all talk he won’t do shite

I don't like that though. This summer eas awesome. I'm for strict no tampering during the season, but once the buzzer goes off for the last time in the finals neither the league, nor the teams care about "tampering".

Yeah, that doesn't violate the 4th Amendment...

It doesn't if it's an NBA owned device.
I don't see how they couldn't just get burners though.
