Should LSU take a few more snaps under center each game?

I know we are all discussing the lack of LSU's running game even though everyone is thrilled and impressed with the new passing attack. Obviously the big fear is that there will be a game or 2 where LSU will have to run the ball to finish off the game or to get a half yard and we are confident we could do that right now.

This is because LSU takes 99% of its snaps (can't find the actual number but not sure I've seen a snap under center yet) in the shotgun which is obviously going to limit the options you have in the running game via formation and angle of attack.

I know we all like that Joe Brady came from the Saints and is installing a lot of the same elements the Saints but we are forgetting the Saints still run a ton of plays from under center.

As a matter of fact, here is a breakdown of the Saints snaps including the type of play was:

Under Center vs. Shotgun
2018: 49% to 51% | 70% of the time they ran the ball they were under center.
2017: 53% to 47% | 73% of the time they ran the ball they were under center.

I know the Saints don't run an RPO like LSU is doing but figured given Brady's background and the obvious tie in, they were worth breaking down.

For a better comparison, lets' look at Arizona and Baltimore this year:

Under Center vs. Shotgun
Arizona: 4% to 96%
Baltimore: 9% to 91%

Not a lot but here is the breakdown of when they run the ball:

Under Center vs Shotgun
Arizona: 67% of runs come from Under Center
Baltimore: 60% of runs come from Under Center

TLDR: Should LSU install a package with the QB under center like the Saints and other the NFL RPO teams do in order to create a few more chances with the running game?

***If anyone knows where to find the actual statistic for LSU snaps under center vs shotgun, please post them. May make this whole post pointless.

I say yes, but I'm thinking a slightly different strategy than you are.

Think back to our max protect last year (and prior years); it didn't take teams long to realize it wasn't a ruse, we were only doing it to fight off rushers.

Here's the key part: for every blocker that we kept in, they sent a rusher. But we weren't fooling anybody.

Line up under center, outside the red zone btw, heavy (not jumbo) formations, maybe even max protect. AND PASS OUT OF IT!

While we don't want to do it too often because we're taking some really special talent off the field in those WRs. We also have some interesting matchup possibilities in Sullivan, Pettigrew, Moss, etc.

It'll pay dividends when we do get in redzone and do want to go under center.

I'm a big believer in the formation and play being counter intuitive, some of the time anyway IF you have the people to make it work. Running out of 10 or 11 personnel formations (think Chip Kelly), passing out of run formations (use flanker or TE for FB if your fullback isn't the best at catching).

I don’t think anyone would have a problem with them adding that as an extra wrinkle, but they clearly don’t feel like they need to.

Can’t blame them as no team has slowed them down. Expect another 400 through the air vs Vandy - their pass D is not good.

I’m confident we can get 1/2 a yard. I’m also confident that we can ice a game with burrow.

I’m also 100% confident to win the SEC this is the exact offense that we need.

Stop overthinking this. We have to beat Bama. You beat them with tempo, space and throwing.

Yes...why not give a defense just one more thing to worry about.

I would like to see some under center and different formations, just to give the defense something else to think about. But if under center I wouldn't want them to run the ball exclusively, mix it up under center, keep the defense off balance and on their heels.

we could still be in 4 wide single back from ACE (under center) formation similar to old RUN N SHOOT offenses.

it would help on short yardage without having to go to BIG formations. but you may need to be in ACE if you need a yard on a QB sneak.
