Don't get a budget lower, some people frown upon them here.

PSA has a complete lower right now for $120. I bought one last week with free shipping.

What special tools are required to assemble an AR?

Torque wrench for your barrel
Punch set
Roll pin punch is nice to have
Castle nut tool
Upper receiver action block
Most hand guards now have their own proprietary barrel nut and wrench so you typically don’t need one.
There is a pivot pin tool that make installing that danged pin a breeze. (wheeler brand)

Can't believe no one has suggested M&P Sport II. Great entry to 5.56 platform at $499 and is ready to roll out of the the box

Tongue and groove pliers wrapped in electric tape work well here too if you don't want to buy the pivot pin tool. They also work well for the bolt catch roll pin.

Don’t get one, I hear some dude Beto is supposed to go around collecting them next year!!!

But if it was me and I was dead set on being a die hard pry it from my hands kind of guy. For what you are wanting to spend I would build one. And if for the only reason that would be to have a decent trigger. Most people will never notice or need a high dollar lower receiver or get the benefit of a high dollar barrel. But I would be willing to bet that everyone can agree that a mil-spec trigger leaves a lot to be desired.

I agree. As i said before, build. But he could get a mp sport 2 and drop in a $90 larue Mbt and that will be hard to beat.

I put my first together by catching complete uppers and lowers on different sales. Saved quite a bit of money and happy with performance.

Update: just lost it in Lake Boeuf. What a shame, I liked that gun.

I built my first and then another, son has built several and all were lost when the damn pirogue tipped over in the swamp.

Great fun to build. I’ve used PSA lowers, Stag Arms, Anderson....all work well.

An AR is capable of shooting several different calibers. I’m only aware of two in an AK.

- wrong

An AK is stamped sheet metal
An AR is aluminum

- wrong

One is red blooded American gun, one is a commie gun.

- in terms of designers yes but beyond that not necessarily true.

Typically an AR is more accurate
Typically an AK is more reliable (runs no matter what).

- with standard sights, not true.

1k dollar AR vs 1k dollar AK the AK outlasts and maybe even performs better.
