Some observations, mostly on the lines
OL: it’s incredible just how good they are as a unit. I don’t think I saw a single time all game the Texans confused us and we missed an assignment (some of this is obviously on Drew) But our guys were impressive taking on stunts and blitzes. Ram beat Watts arse all night. McCoy looked really good in the run game but missed a few blocks in pass pro. The sack Armstead gave up was really because Peat got blown up and Brees couldn’t step up in the pocket.
DL: Cam Jordan was a monster, though he lost contain a few times. Davenport set the edge really well most of the night, he had some good bull rushes (he decleated Kelemente one play), we used Davenport a lot in “blocking” stunts that set up other guys to get pressures, I like him in the middle in pass rush downs, he had a good overall game. Hendrickson looked great around the edge, Malcom Brown was solid... stallworrh and Loewen didn’t give us much. Tuttle had some good reps in the middle. Onyemata is sorely needed back in the middle.
Also of note, we did more stunts than I think I’ve ever seen the saints do in this game.
Demario Davis has some really really bad run fits that led to big runs
Eli Apple had an amazing game... the one pass he allowed (the big Fuller play) was on Marcus Williams who bit on the under route and was supposed to be over the top with Apple underneath.
Lattimore imo was VERY good and even though Hopkins had some big plays, he was with him step for step and sometimes a perfect throw and a great WR just win out.
Marcus Williams did some things really good, but he also gave up major plays by not having over the top help and leaving his corner exposed
Ted Ginn remember when people complained about him having stone hands? Man he looked great
Trequan seems to be developing and gaining trust with Drew, we need him to keep getting better
Jared Cook I really love what he adds to this team and will be huge for us as an additional weapon this year taking on safeties

Davis took a little time to come around last season too. He’ll get it together

It's about time I saw a correct evaluation of Apple. Most idiots on here have been bashing him. The dude has been nothing but a baller since we signed him. His arrival to New Orleans was the missing piece to reaching a top 5 level defense.

I saw it live in the Dome then rewatched it last night. Came away with a new appreciation for Cam Jordan. At one point I was thinking on a field with Drew, Alvin and D. Hopkins he may just be the best player out there!

I find it weird that I continually hear Marcus Williams, Lattimore, and Apple's name called throughout the game but very rarely ever hear Vonn Bell's name being thrown out during the course of the game. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

You must not listen cuz Vonn Bell was like our 3rd leading tackler last year.

But but but his PFF grade was an 88. This always happens with this cry baby arse board. We take PFF for gospel when it says Davenport and Apple suck but won’t listen to it when it says Marcus Williams actually had a good game

Cook needs way more targets!!!
God we need just 1 more good cornerback.

This!
I only saw three targets (caught 2, 1 was too high). Maybe there were more that I missed, but I thought he'd be a bigger piece of the puzzle.

Nice detail. Thanks.
I do think there was more poor tackling than anyone wants to see.

Just got the free 7 day trial of gamepass to check out the all 22. Won't have time to look at the whole thing tonight but very first play both Davis and Marcus Williams were EXTREMELY slow to recognize run and the back was able to cut through a small whole and take advantage of it.
Looks like PJ was playing outside contain/blitz but recognized the run was to the opposite side. MW had the guy PJ was blitzing at in man but never peaked to see if it was run.
Davis was reading run/playaction and just read it dead wrong and followed Watson right with 3 hop steps away from the play. May have been a spy, but that's poor play call if you have PJ crashing in as a 5th rusher.
Also not sure why you'd put MW in the box and have Bell play the single high instead of vice versa. Bell excells in the box and MW kind of doesn't.
Klein had the back but then switched to the opposite side TE as he came across and eventually crashed down towards Watson in case of play action, which makes me wonder why Davis was also spying on Watson (on another look through it looked like Klein was spying the whole way, which makes me think someone didn't know their assignment).
Eventually MW and Davis realized their frick up and hustled to make the tackle 8-9 yards down field.
Cam almost had the tackle at the line coming from the opposite end DE spot. Davenport actually did well to hold contain on the playside but both DTs got washed too far to the left of the play ending up to close to Davenport instead of staying in their gaps.
Lattimore and Apple were playing man.

Just watched the deep pass to Fuller.
You cannot blame this one on Apple. It's decent coverage the whole way but a good throw and great catch.
But a bad trend I see is Allen played MW in the box again with Bell as the single high. Bell bites HARD on an under right and leaves Apple in a terrible spot.
Not sure why Allen is trying to be cute with personnel. Bell is a box safety and MW is a deep safety. Quit dicking around.
And on a second watch through Bell didn't have to bite on the under crosser that hard as Klein was in decent (but not great) position to help cover it. He akso knows he fricked up the second he starts to crash up.

On the play to Hopkins near the end it's cover 2 man. MW and Bell are the deep safeties.
For whatever ungodly reason MW does some stupid stutter step hip spin towards the opposite side of the field and lets Hopkins and Lattimore run right by him (technically they were about even with him as the ball was being released, but by the time MW saw it he was behind the play) without taking a step that way until the ball is thrown.

On the Stills TD Allen tries to get cute with a double A gap pressure look and NO deep safeties.
He also has both Bell and MW running back and forth on a blitz look from opposite sides of the line.
At the last second MW starts running deep as Allen sends 6 guys after Watson (meaning someone will be open for sure) as Bell and one of the A gap LBs blitz.
MW picks up an underneath receiver that should have been carried by the opposite side corner and leaves the deep middle WIDE OPEN. PJ didn't stand a chance with no safety help and the throw right down the middle of the field.
What I'm getting from watching these big plays given up is that guys are out of position and biting on things they have no business biting on.
To me this seems like a coaching/scheme issue as the players often don't look like they know what they are supposed to be doing and are being put in horrible spots/not playing to their strengths.

It was utterly stupid of Allen to blitz that way on this play. They have to score a TD and you want them to at worst make a catch in bounds and run clock. They were out of timeouts and your guys are on edge.
Allen is a horrible DC at end of half/game situational play calling. It has happened every time.
One thing I will give Rob Ryan was that is where he was pretty good when he had talent there.
