It seems like that quote describes dark hair and eyes for the two rivers people not dark skin, and that Rand has coppery skin that doesn’t match the two rivers look.
quote:
Her hand darted out to push back his coat sleeve, exposing lighter skin the sun had not reached so often. “Or such skin.”
Elaida pulled back his sleeve to reveal his farmer's tan, aka he had very fair skin under his shirt. The Aiel have very fair skin underneath their cadinsor.
The Two Rivers folk, as Elaida is pointing out here, are not fair, even under their clothing.
Again, that does not mean that RJ intended them to be black. He probably did not. Some people have interpreted it as vaguely hispanic, most people have interpreted it to mean swarthy/Mediteranean.
But they are not super light skinned people. That is completely a fact. Egwene is repeatedly described as darker.
Again, ultimately, does it matter?
I can understand people getting their panties in a bunch about making James Bond black (I honestly wouldn't care that much about that either), but these characters?

And just to be clear, there are things that would piss me off. I'm not downplaying the changes. I just don't think there is any big deals so far and there is text to support it.
If they make Elayne a 300 pound transgendered Native American, yeah I will be pissed. It would be absurd and have no textual support.
If they make Thom a 22 year old arab midget, yes, I will be pissed.

Thanks Man, I appreciate the response. I feel like a Tolkien-esque start will help lead in my interest. It sounds pretty wild

Robert Jordan had said in the past that the Eye of the World (book 1) was somewhat intentionally a big time Tolkien ripoff because at the time, it was the only way to get a fantasy book published.
As the books go on they are definitely their own thing. FYI, this WAS the most popular fantasy series in the world for a time, before HBO picked up Ice and Fire to do GoT. GRRM needed positive quotes from Robert Jordan in order to sell books on his first couple of novels.
And just to be clear, fantasy has changed a lot since the original production of these novels. They are not perfect. RJ is overly descriptive and goes on and on about certain things. The middle books are a big time chore. Some of the characters, particularly female ones, are maddening. The best character in the series, Mat, doesn't even get a POV until Book 3 and most people are perplexed in the first two books about why he is so popular because he is annoying in the first two novels. A lot of violence and sex happen pretty much "offscreen" because you couldn't do it at the time.
But it is a complex and rich world, with well developed characters and a super intriguing premise.

Good choice for Lan. Really the only two character castings I have an issue with so far are Perrin and Nynaeve, which were straight up diversity castings. Which is fricking stupid because Randland as written is diverse as hell.

think their trying to create a "diverse" cast I hope thats not the case.

The showrunner is a male. Rafe Judkins.
And yes, he did say those words pretty much flat out.

I can't comment too much on this Lan casting as I have never seen this guy act. Anyone here ever watch Criminal Minds?
He's good, he comes across on screen younger than I envision Lan, but the right styling could fix that.

He is pretty much the biggest bad arse in the entire series.
Basically any channeler can treat him like a child.
The biggest badass in pure fighting ability is obviously Rand but Verin had the biggest balls of all.
Sorilea was a badass too, even though she could barely channel.
In my day, girls jumped when a Wise One said jump, and continued jumping until they were told to stop. As I am still alive, it is still my day. Need I make myself clearer?

Forced diversity doesn’t bother me a ton but I think it’s dumb.
There are actually black people in WoT so it seems silly to shoehorn them in for some of the other characters.

The leader of the Seanchan was black, romantically involved with a Caucasian character, and a major player in the series. Seems like Jordan had plenty of diversity 20 years ago.
Lan looked foreign so I get an Asian character.

Asian is actually how I always envisioned the Shienarians/Malkieri because of the armor and sword descriptions.
How I saw the other (major) nations:
Andor = England
Tear = Spain
Cairhien = Spain/England mashup
Illian = A weird Italy/France mashup
Seanchan = Asian, but ethnically super diverse because of how the Empire developed. Hence Tuon being black fits just fine.
Aiel = Irish/Zulu/Arab mashup
Shara = North African/Arab
Sea Folk = African/Greek mashup
Tuatha'an = Gypsies of course
So I don't get why the show's creator felt the need to shoehorn "diversity" with the Perrin and Nynaeve castings.

Straight from RJ, at least in terms of accents and influences:
Andor: England/Ireland, Two Rivers folks however are described as more Medit
Tear - Spain
Cairhien - French, some extremely minor asian influences
Illian - Dutch
Seanchan; Major asian influences with Texas (!) accents
Aiel -- You have the right mixup in terms of influences, but he basically saw them as Irish/Scottish thrust into the desert
Saldaea -- Egyptian
Borderlands -- Heavy asian/ Samurai influences but not necessarily ethnically

exactly. there was diversity in the book, but i guess it's not enough for today's day and age.

It is what it is. I guess I don't care too much if they do a good job.
If the show is really well done, are you really going to care that Perrin and Nynaeve are not ethnically as how you imagined them?
I was prepared for this though as Rafe Judkins (an openly gay guy btw) is a bit of an SJW, and has made several comments that getting the look right wasn't that important to him, that he preferred acting ability and "getting it". And he wanted the cast to look like "the United Nations".
Again, it is what it is. As long as the show doesn't deviate drastically from the books and make overt political statements I won't care. Just do it well.

Ya, but what I worry about is someone who says things like this:
Generally has a tendency to do a good bit of this:
