Daniel Henney of Criminal Minds will play al'Lan Mandragoran in Amazon's Wheel of Time

For the uninitiated, Lan is a bodyguard/protector of one of the main characters, Moiraine. He is pretty much the biggest bad arse in the entire series. He is from the Borderlands which have vaguely Asian customs throughout, although Lan has blue eyes.
Henney has also been on a bunch of other stuff, like XMen Origins, Hawaii 5-0, etc.
He's tall and built well for the part. Looks like this could be some really good casting.

Looks like a good casting for Lan, some of the other people casted seem strange to me, for example Perrin, Nynaeve and Egwene just don't look the part to me. I think their trying to create a "diverse" cast I hope thats not the case. It will be interesting to see how the Andorians look, as Rand needs to look half Andorian and half Aiel.

All they need is a native American now and it will check off all the diversity boxes.

I tried to wiki Wheel of Time. Seems like a futile effort with how sprawling it all looks. Can anyone help out with the basic setting for the first book; or is that a difficult question in itself?

Hmmm. Going basic without spoiling too much.
It is essentially a world where magic exists, called the One Power. There are two halves: The Male half and the Female half.
A few thousand years ago, the world was extremely technologically advanced, and a war took place against Evil.
One man, the Dragon, led the resistance against evil, but the Evil presence tainted the male half of the one power, making any man that uses it go insane. The men then destroyed the world before they could be stopped.
Now, thousands of years later, only Women can do magic safely. The evil presence is stirring and one of those women, Moiraine, believes that the Dragon has been Reborn to save the world, and is searching for him.
If he does exist, he could be the world's savior or destroyer as he goes insane.
The first book is decidedly Tolkien-esque, the rest of the sprawling series is not.
The books center on a few villagers who grow up very remote and are thrust into the center of the increasingly large world and conflicts.

Cast Native Americans to play the Aiel characters, black people for the sea folk (Atha'an Miere), Hispanics as the Seanchan, and all races get represented.

I just hope they do this series justice, cast good actors and don't screw up adapting the story for TV.

The Two Rivers folk are considered "Darker" than the rest of Andor. That is mentioned in the books several times.
However, Jordan most likely meant Greek/Mediteranean and not black judging from his past comments.
I try not to get too hung up on race. Its not really a big deal in this universe, as it is already written as a very, very diverse world.

I also try not to get hung up on race, but in my mind the two rivers people felt like white country folk to me with Rand the only one that didn't quite look like everyone else as his mother was from outside of the two rivers. I missed the references of them looking darker then the rest of Andor, Pperhaps I need to read the books again.

Really hope they do this series justice. Some of the later books weren’t as good but the series overall was great.

Yes books 8-10 are boring with 10 being a complete worthless disaster.
11-14 are great.

You are a very strange guy that is either just trolling or doesn't know how to read.
This is a thread about the casting of Lan.
The Two Rivers folk are mentioned as darker SEVERAL times. I've also said, REPEATEDLY, that on the flipside, Jordan clearly meant Greek/Mediteranean complexion, not black. I've read these novels dozens of times over the past 25+ years. I do know them pretty well.
The point is that one could take the "darker" complexion and interpret it the way the filmmaker does. He isn't right though. They aren't "black" in the novels like Tuon or the Sea Folk are.
I've also said I really don't care, as its not a big deal.
The only race that matters in the novels to any significant degree is the Aiel.
The fact that you are getting bent out of shape about it is pretty bizarre though.

Yes. Exactly that passage. Two Rivers folk are not fair skinned. That is a fact.
It also doesn't matter and has no impact whatsoever on the overarching story. I'm really not going to talk about this anymore.
I can't comment too much on this Lan casting as I have never seen this guy act. Anyone here ever watch Criminal Minds?

It seems like that quote describes dark hair and eyes for the two rivers people not dark skin, and that Rand has coppery skin that doesn’t match the two rivers look. I’ve always imagined the two rivers people as white and I’m sticking with it.
