In a tearful segment that aired on Oklahoma City’s KOCO-TV, morning anchor Alex Housden apologized to her co-anchor Jason Hackett after comparing him to a gorilla during a broadcast Thursday.

The racist comment occurred after the pair reported on a story about a gorilla at the Oklahoma City Zoo.

Housden ended the segment with the comment: “Kind of looks like you,” directed at Hackett.

“He kind of does, actually, yeah,” Hackett hesitantly responded.

The following day, Hackett, who is African American, accepted her apology and said he wanted to take the experience as a teachable moment to his viewers.

“The lesson here is that words matter,” he said sitting beside Housden. “We have to understand the stereotypes, we have to understand each other’s backgrounds and the words that hurt, the words that cut deep.”

Another saying I loathe.

All I learned from this is Hackett is either easily butt hurt or a racist.

eta-Housden can get it.

Words don’t matter. I would trade places with him right now and anyone can call me anything they want.

But he damn sure wouldn’t trade places with me. He has it too good and is an ingrate.

The racist comment

I’m sure her intention wasn’t that black people look like gorillas. I bet she would have made the same comment if her co-anchor were white.

I agree. It's one of those segue comments that anchors say all the time jabbing one another to depict playful banter. I mean in hindsight it probably wasn't the smartest thing to say, but there was absolutely no racist intent there.

It was such a stupid thing to say, that she obviously did not mean it in a racial way. They have to constantly ad lib and try to be funny in that job. I would not last 2 nights before saying something to get fired.

It was a harmless quip

It is 2019.

It is a fun and jovial thing to decide what animal you look like. I have been compared to giraffes and deers

Her comparison wasn’t done out of racism, but out of amiable banter
