$572 Million Decision Against Johnson & Johnson in Landmark Opioid Trial
By Jan Hoffman
Aug. 26, 2019, 4:09 p.m. ET
A judge in Oklahoma on Monday ruled against Johnson & Johnson, the deep-pocketed corporate giant, and ordered it to pay the state $572 million in the first trial of an opioid manufacturer for the destruction wrought by prescription painkillers.
Johnson & Johnson, which contracted with poppy growers in Tasmania, supplied 60 percent of the opiate ingredients that drug companies used for opioids like oxycodone, the state had argued, and aggressively marketed opioids to doctors and patients as safe and effective. A Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, made its own opioids — a pill whose rights it sold in 2015, and a fentanyl patch that it still produces.

They go from handing the shite out like candy to begging the dentist for 5 pills after a double root canal. Everything is so fricked up

We can have nice things, but most people just can't pay for them due to the high prices secondary to lawsuits.

This opioid thing is going to turn out way larger than tobacco and some companies are going to go under.

Seems the docs overprescribing the shite are the problem. Not the companies manufacturing the drugs for legitimate patients.

What about Obamacare's contribution by scoring medical pro on "pain management". That was a big factor.

Unless I am missing something this will not stand. They make a product that serves a legit purpose. It is no their fault the docs prescribe them like m & m's.

CMS mandated pain scores which patients assigned for themselves. Poorer pain scores were equated by government bureaucrats with poor care, and diminished reimbursement regardless of legitimacy of the complaint. Hospitals could lose millions in annual reimbursements if doctors did not attend to "pain" rather than patients. When doctors were less than compliant in response, hospitals hired their own more compliant MDs. Voila! Problem solved.
Enter government lawyers to sue for a problem 100% of their own creation.

I have a very real and long term back pain issue. I am fine for eight to twelve months straight and then WHAM I am laid up for days at a time. Oxycodone allows me to make it through those days. For years now my primary care has given me a scrip so I can grab a dozen pills when needed. Not once have I ever abused it. Now I can't get them when I need them. This is like gun control but with pills. The junkies still get them and I can't.

Looks like shares of JNJ went up 5% on the news.
Turns out JNJ's market capitalization is over $300 BILLION.

They have so many lawsuits. Hernia and TVT Mesh, this, and I think hip replacement devices. $572 mil is a drop in the bucket for them. In advertising alone I heard they spend millions per half an hour.

Govt aproves the use of all these drugs. Why shouldn't the government be the one being sued!!!
It is crazy for the govt to authorize something then later say what you were doing was wrong when you did it!

Agreed. The docs that prescribed them like M&M's should pay not everybody. I was in serious pain and the CVS minute clinic could only prescribe Motrin 800Mg.
Drug seekers ruined it for everyone.

I don’t want to give NYT a click. What’s the state doing with the money?

Understand clearly, I am no Big Pharma supporter. Big Pharma uses this kind of stupidity to justify you paying 10X EU prices for meds. OTOH, when US imbeciles support this BS, I guess we in the US have to pay for it.
