Almost 4 square miles have burned.

Mind, the Amazon is over 2,124,000 square miles...

I think the crappy part is that the Amazon shouldn't burn. It isn't supposed to bu

It's crappy journalism. Sao Paulo is at least 1000 miles south of the Amazon Basin up in the mountains close to the coast. It's not Amazon fires, it's probably fires started in the grasslands to the west of the city by cattle ranchers.

Sounds like it.. LINK

quote:

“The fire that we’re seeing today is a fire that’s directly related to deforestation,” Ane Alencar, the scientific director of Brazilian NGO IPAM (Institute of Environmental Research in Amazonia), told forest news website Mongabay. These are not wildfires, she said, but rather fires set by people seeking to create cattle ranches, intentionally ignited during the dry season each year. “They cut the trees, leave the wood to dry and later put fire to it, so that the ashes can fertilize the soil.”

When the rainy season returns, grass for cattle briefly flourishes, thanks to the nutrients left by the ashes, Mongabay reports.

Wrong. It's outsiders trying to stir up environmental bullshite:

“Everything indicates” that NGOs were going to the Amazon to “set fire” to the forest, Brazil's Presidenat Bolsonaro said in a Facebook Live broadcast.

Fire is a natural part of the process. The amazon will be better off in the long run most likely

That would be a rather small fire. Sounds off.

Has it occurred to you that Jair Bolsonaro of all people may not necessarily be a reliable source of information?

I love when idiots fail to put things in perspective. Mislead the public with the pictures and the headline along the lines of: “The World’s Largest Rainforest is in Flames”

This story is a doozy for the Fake News and Propaganda Division.

1. Fire not caused by global warming, caused by brown skinned cattle ranchers just trying to make a living by providing white man cheap corned beef and patties

2. Forced to admit that trees are a natural way to eliminate CO² from the atmosphere, no tax on energy companies necessary

Luckily for them, most people are too lazy and stupid to read beyond sensationalist headlines

It would be nice if the conversation ventured into general conservation territory, but that is a pill most are not willing to swallow.

Sao Paulo got nothing to do with the amazon. We drove into sao Paulo from Rio and that was one thing I noticed is they do a pretty good job of replanting sections that they cut. If i remember correctly they are big into making paper.

Bolsonaro is a joke. He is using a very trumpian tactic to essentially say...

"I can't confirm this, but it's scientists and environmentalists who live their lives to save and study the amazon who are starting the fires to then blame it on me!!"

Meanwhile he is in bed with big ag and the cattle industry, to an extent that would make the most corrupt politicians in our country blush.
