Coworker's kid went back to school yesterday. Kid is in 2nd grade and 7 years old. They live about 4 blocks away from the school in a fairly affluent area and he doesn't have to cross any major highways or streets.

Well my coworker let his kid ride his bike to school. Apparently no one noticed yesterday morning, but when he tried to leave after school and didn't get in the "pickup" line, the teacher asked him where he was going. He told her he rode his bike and the teacher went batshit. She got the principle, they called my coworkers wife and said they were considering calling CPS. They think it's neglect

What in the world has our society come to? Coworker said his wife brought kid today to save anymore embarassment for the kid, but they're considering letting him continue to ride in the future and daring anyone to question it.

He needs to call a lawyer asap. Even the mention of CPS can rekt his career.

Is it possible that the 7 year old didn’t have the presence of mind to explain how close he lived?

Teacher probably handled it wrong but I wouldn’t let me kid ride to school in today’s world.

If they called CPS, I would do everything I possibly could to ruin their lives.

Let the teacher and principal know that the kid has parental permission to ride his bike to and from school.

Easy solution.

If the parents are cool with the kid riding his bike he should absolutely be able to but in today's day and age they gotta clear that with the school first.

That being said, no way I'm letting a 7 year old do this solo, regardless of where you live, too many creepy fricks out there.

I watched a documentary on this last night LINK

If a 14 year old was naive enough to get into a vehicle with a stranger I'd imagine a lot of 7 year olds would be as well

Weird that the school doesn't have a form parents fill out to inform the school how the kid will get home each day. But maybe if there's no bus service, it's assumed every kid is a car rider. My kids' schools have staggered dismissals based on how they get home. Bus riders dismiss first, car riders, second, and kids in the after school program are dismissed last.

When I was 7 years old, I walked about 5 blocks to school and it was over a railroad track. Sometimes we even had to walk in the snow. True story. It was a small town and most other kids walked as well.

Your coworker is a dumbass for not calling the school ahead of time.

With that being said, frick teachers for being overprotective.

It's come to schools having to protect themselves from litigious parents. If the school was not informed of this kid's mode of transportation, they probably should have freaked out seeing little Timmy hop on his bike and ride off solo.

I don't believe the part about the threat to call CPS. Total cliche add-on to spice up a story and get people to side one way or the other.

Theres a kid in my daughter's 1st grade class in a similar situation. Beside the school is a big field with a walking track about the size of a track around a football field. On the other side of the field is a woodline with a neighborhood behind the row of trees. Maybe about a 6 or 7 min walk door to desk. The school told the kids parents they had to walk him over or drive him and must pick him up in the car rider line.

It's really stupid.

I know times have changed but my elementary school looked like a massive kiddie mud check parking lot every day, almost every kid rode their hog to school

This does sound like all of the information is not being shared by the co-worker.

There was probably something about this in the paperwork the kid got on the first day and the parents did not read it. While I think the school should probably allow it, I also think the school MUST get some kind of waiver from the parents to allow the child to do so. Having the kid simply arrive at the school on his own puts extra liability and duty on the school so of it was against school policy that would also be understandable.

As for if the parents should allow the 7 year old to do so I think that depends on the kid. Some 7 year olds are not mature enough to handle it and some are.

Teacher is doing the good ole “zero tolerance “ BS.

That being said, I went to my kid’s Kindergarten orientation. You need like 4 forms to walk that had to be registered and 5 forms to bike , again, that had to be registered. Parent should have realize that “times, they have a changed”.

Welcome to 2019.
