I will never be on board with a 9 game conference schedule.

(phone rings)

Bevo: Hello?

Boomer: Boomer.

Bevo: Oh, hey Boomer. What's up?

Boomer: It Just Means More called. They want me and Pete to join up. I think we're going to accept.

Bevo: Sad to see you go.

Boomer: No hard feelings?

Bevo: Nah. We'll sure miss you at the state fair.

Boomer: Wait, what?

Bevo: Playing a conference game at the state fair has been a tradition of ours for almost 25 years, you see, and you know how our alumni love our traditions. But hey, good luck with It Just Means More. Maybe you'll get to play in Little Rock--cute town.

Boomer: Nevermind we'll stay. Please don't leave me.

Bevo: Sweet dreams, Boomer. I love you.

Id only be in favor of expansion if the number of playoff rounds/teams increased. That would be a brutal schedule and it would be easier to swallow if it was offset by ever so slightly increased odds of making a playoff.

Id prefer staying how it is now and getting rid of permanent opponents from sec east

I think College Football will change dramatically in how it is distributed and be consumed in the next 10-20 years. The haves and have nots gap will grow wider than ever. I think schools will break away from conferences and the NCAA to the highest bidders when their rights agreement are up, only the best brands and markets will survive. I think you could see a College Football Select premier league of 40-50 teams easily form. Mainly the flagship schools and other big private and state colleges. However they align they will probably group into regional rivalry divisions. Maybe something like this.

PACIFIC

Washington
Oregon
California
Stanford
UCLA
USC

SOUTHWEST

Arizona
Arizona St
Oklahoma
Oklahoma St
Texas
Texas Tech

CENTRAL

Utah
Colorado
Nebraska
Iowa
Missouri
Kansas

NORTH

Minnesota
Wisconsin
Illinois
Notre Dame
Michigan
Michigan St

SOUTH

Texas A&M
Arkansas
LSU
Mississippi
Alabama
Auburn

EAST

Penn St
West Virginia
Maryland

SOUTHEAST

Tennessee
North Carolina

Georgia
Florida

ATLANTIC

"traditional rivalry"

This is bogus. If we simply aligned the teams in a true East and West these would all be taken care of.

These rival games that mattered only consist of Bama vs TN and GA vs Auburn

East by geography

Florida
Georgia
USC
Kentucky
Tennessee
Alabama
Auburn

West by Geography

aTm
Mizzou
Arkansas
LSU
Mississippi
Mississippi State
Vandy

Problem is nobody in the East wants to see Auburn and Bama moved. Yes, Tuscaloosa is slightly further west than Nashville but no way Bama and Auburn would be in separate divisions.

I actually think it is a pretty good proposal!! Two things though;

First if you do that then the big reason to accomplish it, is by making it easier for the universities to travel to each other which would mean splitting by closet locations!

Group “C” in your post should consist of

LSU
Moo State
Ole Piss
A&M

and B should logically be the following;

Alabama
Auburn
Tenn
Vandy

You have to remember this isn’t just about football you have to factor in all the other sports and the travel time.

And I personally feel that all east division opponents should be switched every year! So any player here for four years will get to play at least once every east division team!

That is how I would like to see it piggy backing on your thoughts

The only important casualty of the current lineup is AU-UF. Your idea here is way worse than what we have now. Most of the conference likes it the way it is.

I agree that I don’t necessarily have the perfect grouping of teams in each division, but that debate could be sorted out. It would also change greatly depending on who and where the expansion schools were from.

Just make it a nonconference game. Like it was until the 1990s.

Yep, because having Missouri in the East is a way better idea.

Well, this proposal would solve your only important casualty while simultaneously resolving a number of other scheduling issues. You think UGA likes having LSU for a home game once a decade? You don’t think Bama would love the idea of getting a rematch against Auburn in the SEC Championship?

There’s a reason realignment comes up in the off-season so often. The system has serious flaws and the schools would like to come up with a solution.

At 16 teams (I'll leave who those 2 teams would be up for debate), the SEC could move to a college/NFL hybrid schedule. Split the East and West into 4 divisions, with 4 teams in each, and move to a 9 game conference schedule (like most other power 5 conferences already).

But then you have 4 division champions. Better to do 2 divisions/4 pods like the WAC in the late 1990s.

Games 8-9: Keeping the "traditional rivalry" proponents happy, each team would have 3 cross-division permanent opponents (1 in each of division). Each team would play their 2 permanent opponents from the 2 divisions that are "off-rotation."

Swap this out for NFL-style match-ups against the teams from the "off-rotation" divisions that placed the same as you the previous season. Parity is better than forcing traditional rivalries.

No just 2 champions. The potential matchups just rotate

Year 1:
A/B winner vs C/D winner

Year 2:
A/C winner vs B/D winner

Year 3:
A/D winner vs B/C winner

The WAC does not have near the complexity and drama of the SEC powers that be.

I completely agree that this is the better format, and I originally had this, however I made the “rivalry concession” as it is always the biggest hang up.

Right. My thing is if the rivalry is any good, both teams will finish 1st and play each other anyway.

This is the system that the WAC used for 3 years before 8 teams left and formed the MWC.

Anyway, I suggested a pod system using the current 14 teams on the SEC Rant and got downvoted to hell for it.
