Amazon's Wheel of Time adaptation casting news: The 5 Emond's Fielders are cast

For those following this production of Robert Jordan's seminal fantasy series, Rosamund Pike was already cast as Moiraine Damodred.
Today they announced the casting of the 5 villagers who are basically the main characters of the series. They are all pretty much unknowns, except for the girl playing Egwene who has a few credits to her name.
Rand al'Thor
Josha Stradowski
(FYI, he looks more the role in his actual instagram pics, he's light haired and light eyed, also very tall for an actor which is essential.)
Matrim Cauthon
Barney Harris
Perrin Aybara
Marcus Rutherford
Nynaeve al'Meara
Zoe Robins
Egwene al'Vere
Madeleine Madden
I'm sure people will complain about making the Two Rivers folk ethnically diverse instead of completely homogenous, but as long as they can act I don't care.

Delete.
Got Moraine and Nynaeve mixed up. It’s been about 25 years since I read one of these books

It's my understanding that the source material was never completed prior to Jordan's death. Is this correct?

Mhmm.
Male casting appears to be on point from my memory.
Zoe Robins has the look that she could pull off the severe demeanor of Nyneave.
I’m not sold on the Egwene casting though.
Acting ability trumps all though. So. A wait and see.
I’m waiting for the smoke show they’d better get for Elayne, Aviendha (red hair) if we get that far, and the pixie for Min.
And Lanfear. She’s got to be a legitimately otherworldly dark haired actress with runway model looks. Let’s be serious. She’s the Aphrodite of Jordan’s world.

Correct. But he had 100s of pages of notes detailing the main plot points and character arcs all the way to the end. He knew he wouldn't finish the books due to illness, so he prepared everything for another author to take over.

Brandon Sanderson finished the series. And imo, I think he did a better job than many of Jordan’s later efforts.

In terms of story, Brandon did a great job of finishing the series and was better than Jordan at some things. He struggled mightily with Mat's character in particular.
It kind of makes me wonder if it is due to Brandon being Mormon and Mat being such a womanizer, drinker, and rogue that he just couldn't get the tone for him right.

Hell yes he did. And I like Jordan.

Maybe. I can’t think of a Sanderson character that was as much of a ladies man as Mat. Totally uncouth. Twisted humor. Come to think of it, Mat would be the hardest character for anyone to write. He’s prolly my favorite upon reflection of the series.
I did think Sanderson managed the Tuon/Mat dynamic pretty well though.

They need to get him on the Captain America Strength Plan (aka steroids). He is tiny. Perrin is supposed to be huge.

From what I remember he also wrote the bulk of the last few chapters prior to his death.

The men actually look pretty damn close to how I envisioned them.
Still a ton of smoke show sex panthers to cast on the female side of things.
Show needs to be NC-17

This reeks of diversity for diversity's sake.

My one main thought when looking at the castings. And some yellow contacts.

I don't recall Jordan describing any of the main two rivers characters as brown skinned. That dude described everyone in detail like no other author ever too.

He is like 6'3" and one of the people associated with the show have said he has bulked up considerably since these photos were taken.

They are definitely described as darker than the rest of Andor. Most people have interpreted that as vaguely Mediteranean/swarthy, definitely not black.

Unfortunately, there is a bit of that here, and the showrunner has flat out said as much.
It is what it is, as long as they can act I'm not going to lose my shite over it.

Huge fan, been reading since early 90s. Read them all 4-5 times each. I was very worried they would ruin the casting for diversity's sake rather then sticking to the story....and they did. Count me out.

Unfortunately, it takes away from the story because it is distracting. There wasn't diversity in these communities. Think of our own civilization back in the day. People clung very closely to those like them. Robert Jordan built a very specific world that was very detailed.
Rand was an odd ball in the community and everyone thought of him as one even him.

I hope we don't get into this too much, but in this particular case I'm OK with the casting. I think this is more about being inclusive then forcing diversity. They're trying to reach as wide an audience as possible, so it makes sense to have as many people feel represented as possible. I'm going to let it slide for now, until they cast Elayne, Galad, etc.
